Oct. 15, Liverpool, England (Reuters) – Everton defeated Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield in the Merseyside derby, bringing an end to Liverpool’s excellent start to the Women’s Super League season. Meanwhile, Manchester City defeated Bristol City 5-0 to take the top spot in the standings.

Last week, Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 2-0 after defeating Arsenal 1-0 on the opening day. However, Everton’s first league loss of the season came in the 31st minute when Megan Finnigan, a defender, headed a corner kick.

Due to that outcome, the Reds dropped to fifth place after City defeated Bristol, who was in last place, to take first place with seven points after three games, one point ahead of Liverpool.

With Jill Roord and Bunny Shaw both scoring twice and fullback Laia Alexandri scoring the other goal, City destroyed recently promoted Bristol in a dominant first forty-five minutes of play.

Everton’s enthusiastic display in their first victory of the year lifts them up to eighth place with three points, one spot behind Arsenal, who overcame a 2-1 deficit against Aston Villa with two goals in stoppage time in the second half.

The Gunners’ lead was restored in the 92nd minute by Irish winger Katie McCabe, and two minutes later, England midfielder Beth Mead, who had not played for 11 months due to a catastrophic knee injury, set up Alessia Russo for the game-winning goal.

In front of more than 35,000 fans at the Emirates, it was Russo’s first league goal for the Gunners since joining from Manchester United during the off-season.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed up to fourth place with six points after defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 on the road, while Leicester City is second on goal differential with seven points following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Manchester United, who have five points.

Winners Chelsea defeated West Ham United 2-0 at home on Saturday, with to goals in each half from Sam Kerr and Erin Cuthbert. As a result, Chelsea is now third on seven points.
