‘That means as much’ – Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson reveals touching text he received from Rob McElhenney after 5-0 thrashing as he praises Hollywood owners for support
WHAT HAPPENED?
On September 23, the Dragons were humiliated away to rival League Two contenders vying for promotion; it was their third straight game in which they gave up five goals.dc
Despite the crushing defeat, the Welsh team fully trusted their playing and coaching staff, so there was going to be no emotional response.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Since that heartbreaking loss, Wrexham has won six games in all competitions and gone nine games without a loss. They are currently ranked among the fourth-tier front-runners after their historic promotion back into the Football League the previous season.
WHAT THEY SAID
McElhenney, along with fellow co-chairman Ryan Reynolds, continues to deliver financial and emotional support to Parkinson and his players, with the Wrexham boss saying at the FWA Northern Writers Awards:
“As a manager, every title, cup, and promotion you receive is difficult. It’s really, really, really tough. There are tight dividing lines all the time and you need really good people alongside you.
And that is fantastic, especially with the Hollywood owners’ glitz and glamour. But Rob and Ryan are really genuine people and have been so supportive to me and Steve.
Not just monetary support, should we need to bring in a player, but also emotional support each time they visit or in the event of a poor outcome.
A few months ago, we lost to Stockport 5-0. McElhenney texted us first, saying, “Phil, we are right behind you, we are right with you.” That text meant a lot, including financial support.
UP NEXT: WHAT HAPPENS?
Wrexham have moved into the second round of the FA Cup this season, are set to progress from their group in the Football League Trophy, and sit third in the League Two table after 16 games – five points back on leaders Stockport.
