Since joining Tottenham this summer, Maddison has wowed fans and helped new manager Ange Postecoglou maintain his unbeaten record by scoring two goals and providing two assists in four Premier League games.
Brendan Rodgers discussed how his former player’suits’ playing for an offensive coach like Postecoglou on talkSPORT Breakfast (06/09/23 @ 9:15 a.m.).
Of course, he had the same treatment under Rodgers in Leicester, which is why he has scored 22 goals and provided 17 assists in the last two seasons.
Regardless, here’s what Rodgers had to say about Maddison’s abilities as a player and his move to Tottenham.
“No, not at all (surprised by Maddison),” Rodgers said. “I feel there are two contributing aspects. James, for one, has actually matured. He had some things to improve on when I first arrived in Leicester, but his talent was clear.
“According to those who know him well, he is a huge fan of the game.” He is a die-hard football lover. His personality is fantastic. But he’s a top-tier player, so I’m happy for him.
“As for Tottenham, Ange is an attacking coach, and James fits that style.” He requires a manager who will go after the game. That will be a great fit for him.
“Tottenham as a club is steeped in a history of really good football, so he will fit in perfectly.” I can’t say enough good things about him; as a young man, he’s incredible, and as a footballer, he’s one of the best in the Premier League.”
Can Maddison lead Tottenham back to Europe?
The impact Maddison has made is one of the key reasons Spurs haven’t missed Harry Kane.
Spurs fans have been clamoring for a player of his caliber for years, and now that he has here, the goalscoring midfielder is all they dreamed for.
It is now up to Maddison to sustain his performance and assist the club in returning to Europe.
