West Brom in talk to bring in another centre-back as the transfer window…

West Brom may attempt to bring in another centre-back before the transfer window closes, according to Birmingham Live reporter Joseph Chapman.

The Baggies have plenty of options at the back, but Semi Ajayi is expected to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations early in the new year and others have been linked with a move away.

Providing an update on Albion’s transfer activity on Tuesday [15 August], Chapman stated that the club may revisit the option of bringing in another player at the back ahead of the 11pm deadline on 1 September.

Losing Ajayi for potentially six weeks or so from early January, should he get called up by Nigeria for AFCON, will leave Albion a key player light during an important period of the campaign.

With Carlos Corberan opting for a back five formation for the 3-2 win over Swansea City at the weekend, the Spaniard would certainly not say no to another defensive option being drafted in.

The jury remains out on Cedric Kipre following his return from a season on loan at Cardiff City, while versatile defender Erik Pieters is now 35 years old.

Corberan has previously said he will look to the Premier League loan market for options, and it may well be that top-flight clubs look to offload some youngsters as the transfer deadline approaches.

If that proves the case and Albion are in position to pounce, it may just pay dividends come the second half of the campaign.
