There is still a lot of smoke, and the NFL draft is still more than three weeks away. But as of right now, J.J. McCarthy is the player whose draft position is the subject of the greatest conjecture.
For weeks, the Michigan quarterback has been seen as a major draft board climber. Indeed, during the NFL owners’ meeting last week, NFL Media revealed that league executives were speculating that he might be selected by the Washington Commanders.
There is now buzz that McCarthy could be signed by the New England Patriots (assuming he makes it past Washington).
The Patriots could easily select a quarterback, trade the pick, or select a player at a different position. They are therefore a pivotal pick in the draft.
Naturally, the Las Vegas Raiders are keeping a close eye on quarterback prospects at the top of the draft.
The Raiders and New England might work together to trade for the choice so that the latter can select a quarterback. So, they’ll be keeping a careful eye on this selection.
It will be a crazy situation at No. 4 if the Commanders select a different quarterback (either North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels, presuming the Bears select USC’s Caleb Williams with the first overall pick) and the Patriots do select McCarthy.
