Breaking: Another Texas Longhorns RB To Enter NCAA Transfer Portal

One of the most adaptable components in the Texas Longhorns running back room will go to the portal.

Since the beginning of the offseason, the Texas Longhorns have lost a significant number of athletes to the NCAA Transfer Portal.

But on Monday, they suffered what was probably their worst defeat to date.

After spending two seasons with the organization, Texas all-purpose running back Savion Red will reportedly join the portal, per rumors from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Red was an integral part of the Longhorns’ 2023 success, even though he is clearly not at the top of the depth chart at this position. He lines up as the star player in the “Red Cat” package in goal line and short yardage situations, and he usually has great success.

He was also a vital component of the Longhorns’ special teams squad and frequently played in the kick return unit.

Red’s ability to make plays as a runner and a pass catcher was so exceptional that his former Texas teammate Jordan Whittington once likened him to NFL star Deebo Samuel.

Whittington stated in August, “His athletic abilities, being a good teammate and picking up on the offense and understanding football pretty well.” “He’s practicing and putting on plays. Undoubtedly, he is a playmaker. I think he looks like Deebo Samuel, which is why we all nickname him that.”

Red initially committed to the Longhorns during the early signing period in December 2021. He was an underappreciated three-star prospect and a late addition to the 2022 class.

In 12 games during the previous season, Red rushed 30 times for 131 yards and one touchown. Before switching from wide receiver to running back in his nine games as a freshman, he had six catches for 34 yards.
