How Former Michigan Football Players Fared With New School In 2023
With gain, there is always loss as well. Michigan lost several members from the 2022 squad — including some past starters. In the world of the transfer portal, there are always players looking to go elsewhere for various reasons.
Here’s how all the former Michigan players fared with their new team that entered the 2023 transfer portal. I also included some notable names from the 2022 cycle as well.
Erick All
Tight end Erick All transferred to Iowa and was a major contributor early on. He tore his ACL against Wisconsin and was only able to play in seven games. As of now, All is still Iowa’s leading pass catcher with 299 yards. He also leads the team with three touchdowns.
All is eligible to return to Iowa in 2023-24.
Andrel Anthony
The junior receiver went down against Texas and also had a season-ending injury. While Anthony had a couple of big games for Michigan, Anthony looked like a star in the Oklahoma offense. In the six games he played, Anthony was the leading receiver for the Sooners with 429 yards. He finished his 2023 season with one receiving touchdown.
Alan Bowman
Now on his third school, Bowman did enough to earn the starting quarterback role. Bowman spent time at Michigan learning behind Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy after starting for Texas Tech.
In the 12 games at OSU, Bowman threw for 2,808 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The Cowboys went 9-3 in the regular season.
Bowman and Oklahoma State will face Texas this Saturday in the Big 12 Championship.
Zach Carpenter
The big offensive lineman was an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2023 with Indiana. He started all 12 games at center for the Hoosiers and allowed just 10 pressures.
Carpenter entered the transfer portal after Tom Allen was fired.
Damani Dent
The former three-star defensive back followed Biff Poggi to Charlotte. He didn’t see any playtime with the 49ers this season.
Dent didn’t get on the field with Michigan either.
Louis Hansen
The former four-star tight end transferred to UConn where he was closer to home and had an opportunity to get on the field. Hansen saw just two receptions for 33 yards this season with the Huskies.
A.J. Henning
Henning was a notable player who transferred away from Michigan this past cycle. Henning ended up with Northwestern and saw his role jump up. In the 11 games he played, he finished third on the team with 361 receiving yards and four scores.
Henning also had 26 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Nikhai Hill-Green
Hill-Green was another Michigan player to follow Biff Poggi to Charlotte this past offseason. The linebacker finished second on Charlotte this season with 73 tackles. Hill-Green had nine TFLs and two sacks with the 49ers.
Hill-Green entered the transfer portal recently and is looking for another opportunity — maybe at a Power Five program.
Giles Jackson
Jackson transferred to Washington back in 2021. The speedy receiver played in just four games this season due to an injury. He finished the ’23 regular season with 13 receptions for 103 yards and a score.
Jackson and Washington will face Oregon on Friday night for the Pac-12 Championship.
Cade McNamara
After starting for Michigan in 2021, McNamara lost the starting job to J.J. McCarthy in 2022. McNamara transferred to Iowa this past offseason, along with tight end Erick All.
McNamara was named the starter but suffered a season-ending injury against Michigan State. In the five games he played, he threw for 505 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.
He announced he would be returning to Iowa in 2023-24.
Joe Milton
Milton transferred to Tennessee back in 2021 and he finally got a full season to start for the Vols in 2023. But things were inconsistent and shaky at times for Milton. While Milton still has a cannon for an arm, the accuracy isn’t always there.
He did throw for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Milton completed 64.7% of his passes in ’23.
RJ Moten
Moten, who was a starter for Michigan in 2022, opted to transfer to Florida this past offseason. He played in just six games with one start for the Gators and finished with eight tackles and two TFLs.
Eyabi Okie-Anoma
Yet another Michigan player to go to Charlotte with Biff Poggi. The 49ers mark Okie-Anoma’s fourth school, but he excelled on the field with Charlotte in 2023.
The former five-star recruit had 56 tackles and led the team with 11.5 TFLs and 5.5 sacks.
George Rooks
Rooks went back east and transferred to Boston College this past offseason. He played in all 12 games for the Eagles and was toward the top of the team with 29 tackles. He also racked up 2.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks in 2023.
Andre Seldon
The former Wolverine is in his second season with New Mexico State. Seldon finished No. 6 on the team with 45 tackles. The former Michigan product also grabbed an interception in 2023.
Deuce Spurlock
Spurlock was at Michigan in 2022 as a redshirt freshman but transferred to Florida this past offseason. He saw just three games of action with the Gators this season all of which came on special teams. Spurlock came to Michigan as a four-star linebacker.
Christian Turner
Turner played with Michigan in 2018-2019 before playing two seasons with Wake Forest. Now, in 2023, Turner played all 12 games with the Indiana Hoosiers.
In 12 games this year, Turner carried the ball 52 times for 227 yards and two scores.
Taylor Upshaw
Upshaw originally transferred to Colorado to play for Coach Prime, but things must not have worked out because he entered the portal shortly after the spring game. Upshaw ended up at Arizona and helped the Wildcats to a 9-3 record.
Upshaw played in all 12 games and was No. 7 on the team with 30 tackles. The Edge defender led Arizona with 11.5 TFLs and 8.5 sacks in 2023.
Dan Villari
Villari, a former quarterback commit, transferred to Syracuse and is in his second season playing with the Orange. Think of Taysom Hill with the Saints when you think of Villari — a do-it-all type of player.
He played in all 12 games this season and contributed all over. Villari is 19-for-22 for 122 yards and a TD passing. He ran it 44 times for 289 yards and two touchdowns. And Villari caught 20 passes for 180 yards and three scores.
Julius Welschof
Welschof was the other Michigan player to follow Biff Poggi to Charlotte in hopes of finding a bigger role than he had at Michigan. But he played in just four games with the 49ers this season.
Welschof had four tackles with Charlotte.
