Smith, who grew up in East Greenbush, near Albany, posted on X that he was “heading home for 2024” in announcing the move.
The 27-year-old was part of the package Oakland received when it traded Matt Chapman to Toronto in a salary dump, and although he’s had some success at the minor league level, Smith hasn’t been able to hit in the majors.
He has a.516 OPS in parts of three seasons with the A’s and Blue Jays.
