Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle.
The Premier League champions have been attempting to sign Wolves star Matheus Nunes in a separate deal during the last week.
According to sources, that deal is nearing completion, but Wolves have taken advantage of the opportunity to agree on a City player moving in the opposite direction.
Doyle has made seven appearances for his boyhood club City, but he created a name for himself during a loan spell with Sheffield United in the Championship in 2022-23.
In addition to impressing in the second division, the England Under-21 international scored the game-winning goal in the FA Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers.
The 21-year-old will now be able to play in the Premier League for Wolves, who have signed him on a season-long loan.
Wolves also state that they have the option to sign Doyle on a permanent basis at the end of the season for a fee ranging between £4.3m and £5m, with City possessing a sell-on clause.
“I’ve talked before about players coming here with the hunger to kick on again, and Tommy is another one of those,” Sporting Director Matt Hobbs told the club’s official website.
“He’ll give us something different – he has a good age profile, a good character profile, and above all, he’s a good footballer.” He checks a number of our boxes.
“He went to Championship and forced his way into the team, proving he was more than that.” The next task is to show he can do it every week in the Premier League, and we’re here to support him. Gary is here to develop him as a Premier League midfielder like he was, so I think we’re a great environment for Tommy to demonstrate his abilities.”
Wolves have signed three players in less than 24 hours after a disappointing summer in the transfer market, with Santiago Bueno and Enso Gonzalez joining from Girona and Club Libertad on Thursday.
