REACTION: Toti Gomes was complimented by Gary O’Neil as a decent guy who is vital to the Wolves.

Gary O’Neil insists Toti Gomes is ‘extremely important’ to his Wolves side, despite the defender’s limited minutes.

So far this season, the 24-year-old has made one start in the Carabao Cup and two substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Gomes is now second in the pecking order behind captain Max Kilman, but O’Neil insists the defender is an important member of his side and has room to grow.

When asked if Toti is an important member of his Wolves team, O’Neil replied, “Yeah, he is.” I’ve spoken with him; he’s a nice guy who works really hard.

He recognizes that he is currently trailing Max in team selection, but I don’t really operate a squad that way. There is no number one or number two position for me; they are all equally significant.

Toti is aware that he can earn his spot on the squad if he works hard, performs, and earns it.

He is really significant to us. He can play left back, which is obviously beneficial, and he has a lot of potential that we can develop.

He’s a player whom the coaches and I am looking forward to working with.

The last two international breaks saw Toti called up to the senior Portugal team, but he has yet to make an appearance.

The manager, Roberto Martinez, is rumored to be a huge fan of Gomes, but despite the 9-0 thumping of Luxembourg in which Toti was an unused substitute, Martinez has yet to give the defender a senior cap for his nation.
