West Ham United are on the verge of signing Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez as he flies to London for a medical.
Ajax ace Edson Alvarez has been pictured on a plane ahead of completing his move to West Ham United.
Fabrizio Romano has today posted a photo of Alvarez alongside his entourage as they board a plan to London.
Agents Fulco and Nathan van Kooperen are seen in the photo alongside West Ham United sporting director Tim Steidten.
If West Ham fans had any lingering doubt that Alvarez would be heading to East London, this photo should calm those fears.
Romano adds that Alvarez will now become the most expensive Mexican player of all time.
BBC Sport claim that the deal is worth around £35million with Alvarez now set to replace Declan Rice.
West Ham seemingly wanted to land a pure defensive midfielder to replicate Rice’s input in front of the back four and have picked Alvarez.
Chelsea to miss out on Edson Alvarez
West Ham fans will be happy to see this deal go through amid lingering rumours of interest from Chelsea.
The Blues are desperate for midfield additions having offloaded N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer.
The Times reported just last week that Chelsea were back in the hunt for Alvarez with Mauricio Pochettino keen to land a midfield anchor.
Chelsea targeted Alvarez last summer but Ajax stood firm having lost a number of key players in one fell swoop.
The Blues have been looking at Alvarez again but are now seeing him head to the other side of London with West Ham.
Chelsea now appear to have pivoted to Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams with the American international becoming a key target.
West Ham will hope for no nasty surprises but with Alvarez on a plane alongside Steidten, this deal appears to be on the verge of completion.
