Just in: Brazilian government summons West Ham midfielder for hearing amid gambling accusations

Lucas Paqueta is called before a government inquiry amid gambling allegations, according to West Ham United reports.

According to UOL, West Ham player Lucas Paqueta has received a summons from the Brazilian government to appear at a hearing on the gambling allegations made against him.

The 26-year-old was reportedly invited to participate in a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of Manipulation in Football, but he did not respond to the invitation, according to a Brazilian news outlet, which means he must appear in person before the committee on Monday, September 11, via video call.

The Brazilian international is being investigated for his involvement with a suspicious sports betting anomaly alongside Real Betis forward Luiz Henrique, who responded to the committee’s invitation and is likely to be interviewed by video call next week.

Paqueta’s decision to skip government sessions may not be the best move since he undoubtedly wants to use every chance to establish his innocence.Because Luiz Henrique chose to accept the invitation, the West Ham midfielder may follow suit because he won’t want to appear suspicious.

As demonstrated by earlier cases of suspected gambling that have been brought up, notably those that have occurred in the UK, it is a problem that is unlikely to go away very soon.

It took the better part of six months for Ivan Toney’s case to be resolved, and on May 18 [Sky Sports], the Brentford attacker was given an eight-month suspension.

After the most recent development, it is unknown where this narrative will go next. However, everyone connected to the Hammers will be hoping that it is resolved quickly so that he may continue to play for the team this season.
