The organization stated this morning that Hamilton, often known as “Hammy,” fell unwell last year.
Hamilton participated in Albion’s 1992–93 Division Two play-off victory at Wembley under Ossie Ardiles after the team had dropped into the third tier but had quickly earned a return via promotion.
He scored one of the pivotal Hawthorns goals, the go-ahead strike in the semi-final comeback victory over Swansea in the second leg, a night and atmosphere that are still warmly regarded today.
The first player I purchased on Keith Burkinshaw’s advice without having seen him play was Ian Hamilton. He was such a success. one of the key guys for us this season. An excellent person to be around. Hammy, I’ll miss you. My condolences and prayers are with your loved ones.
Hamilton had traveled from Scunthorpe United to The Hawthorns. Hamilton, who is from Stevenage, had progressed through Southampton’s junior ranks.
Hamilton was well-liked by both Albion supporters and his fellow Baggies teammates.

He later played 240 league games for the team, scoring 23 goals, many of them while Alan Buckley was the manager. In 282 games for Albion throughout all competitions, he scored 28 goals.
Hamilton later had time with Grimsby Town, Notts County, Lincoln City, and Woking before transferring to Sheffield United in 1998 for £325,000.
On social media this morning, tributes from admirers and former teammates poured in.

Prior to the team’s next home game against Millwall on Saturday, September 23, the club has announced that they would honor the late midfielder with a minute of applause.
Hamilton is survived by his son Luca, daughter Rhianna, and grandchild.
