Ivan Perisic’s right knee’s anterior cruciate ligament damage has been officially confirmed by Tottenham.
The Tottenham midfielder, who came off the bench against Sheffield United and was crucial to the team’s comeback, will now have surgery and will likely miss the remainder of the season.
The club announced on X that the Croatian international hurt himself during non-contract practice before this weekend’s north London derby match against Arsenal.
The 34-year-old Perisic played an important role for Antonio Conte’s team last year, frequently playing wing back for a Spurs team that finished eighth in the Premier League.
He has been more of a squad player since Ange Postegoclou arrived but has been used as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation under the Australian.
Tottenham have confirmed that Ivan Perisic has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his right knee
The midfielder played a key role in Tottenham’s comeback victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday
He has played six times for the team so far this season, but the injury may have ended his season.
On Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he came off the bench in the 80th minute and took the corner to help fellow substitute Richarlison score the equalizer before Dejan Kulusevski’s winning goal.
His season is now likely ended despite his six appearances for Tottenham this year, including one in the Carabao Cup during the club’s loss to Fulham on penalties.
It’s possible that Perisic has played his final game for the team he joined from Inter Milan last season because he’s 34 and his contract expires in the summer.
In his Spurs career he has made 50 appearances to date, scoring one goal after arriving on a free transfer to join Conte’s men.
Prior to his arrival he had spent seven years in Italy with Inter Milan, making just under 250 appearances with a loan move to Bayern Munich sandwiched in the middle.
He has also played for Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge during his career.
Tottenham star Ivan Perisic could be ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.
The Croatia defender will undergo surgery after sustaining the problem in non-contact training, Spurs have confirmed.
A club statement read: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee.
“The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery.
“Wishing you well in your recovery, Ivan.”
Perisic is out of contract at the end of the season and the typical recovery time for ACL injuries is eight to nine months, meaning he may have played his last game for the club.
The 34-year-old veteran had made an impactful start to the campaign, establishing himself as a key player from the bench in a number of games.
