Tottenham updates Brennan Johnson lauded Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham’s new look in his first interview since coming from Nottingham Forest.
Brennan Johnson has explained why he chose to join Tottenham in the summer transfer window after his £47.5million move from Nottingham Forest was confirmed on deadline day. The Wales international has signed a six-year contract with the club after becoming Ange Postecoglou’s ninth summer signing.
As football.london reported at the start of the week, Johnson was Postecoglou’s priority signing with Chelsea and Brentford also interested. Eventually both London clubs chose to go down other avenues with the Blues signing Cole Palmer from Manchester City and the Bees agreeing a loan deal with Everton to see Neal Maupay seal a sensational return, allowing Spurs to sign the forward.
Johnson, who had started every game for Forest in the 2023/24 season, was a key part of their initial promotion to the Premier League and survival in the division sealed four months ago. The 22-year-old scored eight goals in the 2022/23 season with his 16 goals in the previous campaign helping Steve Cooper’s side achieve promotion.
After two superb seasons at the City Ground, Johnson has now earnt his big move with the man himself explaining why now was the right time to join the club. “It’s a dream come true for me to play for a club of this stature,” he said in his first interview as a Tottenham player. “The fans are unbelievable. The manager has come in and got behind them so I think at this moment in time it was the perfect decision for me.
“I managed to watch the games against Brentford and Bournemouth and I just think the style of play has been incredible. All the players have got behind it and you can really see them coming together and it was just something I really wanted to be involved in.
“I think I’m a player who tries to excite the fans. I’m very direct and fast. I try and get the ball up as far up as I can and try and get some goals and assists as well but the end of the day I just want to work hard for the team.”
Johnson will not be available for Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Burnley with the transfer going through after the registration deadline. The international break will allow Johnson some time with his new team-mates however he will be part of Wales’ for their Euro 2024 qualifiers.
