West Brom’s financial problems continue to irritate the club, but Carlos Corberan remains upbeat as he and the club explore the loan market this summer, according to Birmingham Live.
The West Brom manager has claimed that the club will have to look in the loan market this summer, but he has refused to be pessimistic, stating that this does not mean the club will not be able to bring in decent players.
Corberan praised the English loan market, citing England U21s’ recent U21 European Championship success, in which players who play for Premier League clubs but may not be ready to play in the Premier League shown their usefulness.
Speaking via Birmingham Live, Corberan stated: “Depending on your resources you will look in one market or another, but it doesn’t mean you can’t achieve good players. For example, the loan market in England is very useful, very, very useful. There are very, very talented players.
“You can see in the recent European under-21 Championship with England winning the tournament – against Spain. – means the level of this country of under-21 players is massive. Some of them are in Premier League clubs but still not ready to compete in the Premier League.”
Corberan utilised the loan market well during his time at Huddersfield Town and revealed: “I have in my mind the work we did with [Levi] Colwill; he’s in the international under-21 team and playing for Brighton in the Premier League. It was obvious he would play in the Premier League, he had a massive impact in my squad at Huddersfield.”
The loan market has proved successful recently
Championship clubs have always utilised the loan market well, with current England internationals and superstar players all spending time on loan. Last season alone, Sunderland and Burnley used loans brilliantly with the likes of Amad Diallo and Taylor Harwood-Bellis making massive differences to their teams.
Harry Kane (loaned to Millwall, Norwich and Leicester), Marc Guehi (loaned to Swansea City), Mason Mount (loaned to Derby County) and Conor Gallagher (loaned to Swansea) are all examples of current England internationals who have spent time in the Championship in recent years.
Corberan’s experience with Colwill at Huddersfield will set him up well as he knows what these types of players will need to thrive and succeed in the Championship.
As Corberan stated, the loan market can be very exciting and provide some very good options to clubs like West Brom who can’t splash the cash on multi-million-pound signings.
