Chubb sustained a horrific knee injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, which ended his season.
Two procedures are necessary, with the final one scheduled for November. The organization is optimistic that Chubb will play at some point during the upcoming season, but they are unsure of the exact timing for his return.
Even so, Cleveland.com’s Terry Pluto, a Browns insider, doesn’t anticipate seeing the former Chubb for a while.
It’s unlikely that Chubb will be prepared for the season to begin. Within three months, he underwent two significant knee surgeries,” Pluto wrote in his Friday, February 9 Q&A column. “I’m hoping he gets to play in 2024. The best Chubb after surgery is definitely a long way off, maybe not until 2025.
Since the day he was selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb has been the center of the Browns offense. In six seasons, Chubb has amassed 6,511 yards and 48 touchdowns from rushing. His 5.3 yards per rush over his career is among the best in the league.
Despite not being a big talker in the first place, Chubb has been silent since his operation. He did, however, spend some time exploring the team’s facilities. During the Browns’ last home game, he even made an appearance as the Dawg Pound Captain.
Nick Chubb’s contract is up for decision for the Browns.
During his season-ending press conference, Browns general manager Andrew Berry aptly referred to Chubb’s contract predicament as the “monster in the room.”
For the upcoming season, Chubb will count close to $16 million against the cap. For a running back who recently underwent major knee surgery and has an ambiguous recovery date, it’s a significant figure. By releasing Chubb, the Browns may save $11.825 million.
The Browns intend to renegotiate Chubb’s contract during the offseason. It is hoped that Chubb will get better and stick around the team for the time being.
On January 22, Berry stated, “Obviously, I understand that’s a little bit the elephant in the room in terms of Nick moving ahead.” “Nobody wants to witness that carry in Pittsburgh be his final Cleveland Browns carrying of the ball. It’s also evident that there are issues that we must resolve, but that is not our goal either. Of course, we’ll try to keep him on the squad.
Kareem Hunt isn’t anticipated to rejoin the Browns
After Chubb was hurt, the Browns went to a committee about running back. Among them were Pierre Strong Jr., Kareem Hunt, and Jerome Ford.Hunt will be a free agent next season, but Ford and Strong have contracts that end after this one.
Hunt averaged just 3.0 yards per run over the course of the season, finishing with 411 yards on 135 carries. It was in circumstances involving short yards that he contributed most significantly. Hunt finished the regular season with a team-high nine rushing touchdowns. In the Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, he added two more touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.
Pluto doesn’t think Hunt’s professed wish to return to Cleveland will materialize.
“I don’t believe Hunt will return. Pluto noted, “They like Ford, but I expect them to draft or shop for a young running back.”
Hunt was without a team for the first few weeks of the season. After Chubb got hurt, the Browns called.
