The organisation also announced today that they signed fullback Jeff Paulk off the practice squad, added former Boston University punter Brad Costello to the practice squad, and acquired safety Matt Stevens, who was claimed off waivers by the Washington Redskins.
Law, 26, finished with 74 total tackles, two interceptions, and had started the first 15 games of the season. Currently ranked sixth on the team in tackles, he has 74. He has also intercepted 11 passes, which is a team high. Law has started 79 of 87 games in six NFL seasons, totaling 399 tackles (338 solo), and 22 interceptions. Right now, his 22 interceptions are ninth in franchise history.
The Buffalo Bills selected 27-year-old Stevens in the third round (80th overall) of the draft. He is a fifth-year veteran. The 206-pound, six-foot-tall safety attended Appalachian State for four years. He had 49 tackles (30 solo) and two interceptions in 13 games as a rookie in 1996, starting 11 of them. After training camp, the Bills released him in 1997, and he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. He participated in ten games that season and was second on the team with sixteen special teams tackles. He began the 1998 season with the Eagles, appearing in seven games with one start and accumulating eighteen tackles (10 solo). He saw action for the first time in Week 14 after signing with the Washington Redskins late in the season. In his three games, he made four special teams tackles. In 15 games played last season, including one start for the Redskins, he recorded a career-high 36 solo tackles, six interceptions, 12 passes defensed, and 54 tackles overall. In addition, he recorded three special teams tackles and his first NFL sack. During the playoffs, he had three tackles for the Redskins. He participated in all 15 Redskins games this season, making four starts. Before being released, he has 43 tackles (33 solo), one fumble recovery, and one pass intercepted. Throughout his career, he has participated in 63 games, made 17 starts, accumulated 173 tackles (118 solo), 10 pass interceptions, one sack, two recovered fumbles, and one forced fumble.
On December 7, 2000, Paulk, then 24 years old, was signed to the Patriots practice squad. The Atlanta Falcons selected him with the 92nd overall pick in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. During his debut season, he was a member of their roster and participated in just one game. The 6-foot, 240-pound fullback was a member of the Falcons’ preseason squad before being cut on August 19th, the day of training camp. At Arizona State, Paulk participated in 43 games, making 19 starts. Over his Sun Devil career, he gained 554 yards on 121 carries (4.6 average.).
On April 23, 1998, Costello, at 26 years old, signed a rookie free agent contract with the Bengals. After training camp, he was let go, but on November 11 he signed on again to their practice squad. He participated in the final three games of the season after being added to their active roster on December 7. Out of 10 punts, he averaged 49.5 yards per punt. He played in five games in 1999, averaging 33.8 yards on 22 punt attempts. On August 22, 2000, the Bengals released him. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound punter concluded his collegiate career as Boston University’s all-time top with a 42.3-yard average, leading the Atlantic 10 in punting in 1996 and 1997.
