FOX19, Columbus, Ohio – A few days prior to their match against Maryland, Ohio State suspended their standout defensive player for an NCAA infraction.
Chase Young, a defensive end and candidate for the Heisman Trophy, verified the news on Twitter by posting a statement outlining his side of events.
Young added in the statement, “Unfortunately, I won’t be participating this week due to an NCAA eligibility issue.” “Last year, I made a mistake by taking out a loan from a family friend I’d known since the summer before I started my first year at OSU. In order to return to the field as soon as possible, I’m working with the institution and NCAA and paid it back in full last summer. I would like to express my gratitude to my family, friends, coaches, and the Ohio State community for their unwavering love and support. Godspeed, and let’s go Bucks!
Additionally, a man who seemed to be Young’s lawyer commented on the ban on Twitter.
“Last year, Chase took out a minor loan from a close friend to pay for necessities.” We’re attempting to get him back to eligible again; the loan was paid back months ago. Tim Nevius posted on Twitter, “Outdated and unfair NCAA rules punish athletes for making ends meet while benefitting everyone else.”
Nevius is a sports lawyer who founded and serves as the executive director of the College Athletic Advocacy Initiative, according to his Twitter account. In addition, he claims to be the co-chair of Winston & Strawn’s collegiate sports law practice in New York and a former NCAA investigator.
Young, an Ohio State junior, was born in Maryland and won’t be able to play until the Buckeyes visit his state.
On Tuesday night, ESPN revealed the College Football Playoff Rankings, with Ohio State as the top team.
ESPN reports that Young is tied for second place in the FBS with 15.5 tackles for loss and leads the league with 13.5 sacks.
They claim that on October 26, during Ohio State’s 38-7 victory against Wisconsin, Young tied the single-game record for sacks and tackles for loss at Ohio State.
According to a lot of sources, Young might be selected first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
