Enzo Maresca came away pleased to see his Leicester City’s side stick to their principles despite the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

On Wednesday night at Anfield, the Foxes took the initiative right away and went ahead when Kasey McAteer slipped the ball home. Cody Gakpo drew even shortly after the half, and after Dominik Szoboszlai gave the Reds the lead, Maresca’s team was unable to recover. Later, Diogo Jota added a third.

Despite the fact that their cup run came to an end in the third round, the visiting Foxes had a lot to be proud of for their 90 minutes of competition against strong Premier League opponents.

I’m very proud of them, the 43-year-old said following the game, to continue in the way we want to play on the ball, off the ball.

At the end of the first half, we had a 1-0 lead in the game.
Results are important, no doubt, but for me, tonight’s most significant event was watching how we came here and competed directly against a large squad.

But the apart from the goal, I think we played in the way we wanted to play and the way we are working every day, the most important thing was to come here against this opponent, in this stadium, and don’t change the way we want to play. It’s always a chance to learn something.”

The Italian admitted that the timing of Liverpool’s equaliser was far from ideal, coming just after the interval, which gave the home side the impetus to go on and turn the contest on its head.
