Kris Boyd was blown away by Todd Cantwell’s “moment of magic” as Rangers drew 2-2 with PSV on Tuesday (22 August).
Attackers Abdallah Sima and Rabbi Matondo were on the scoresheet in the Champions League play-off first leg at Ibrox.
Cantwell played a key role in his club’s second goal of the night, playing through Cyriel Dessers who provided the assist for Matondo.
“There was a moment of magic, Todd Cantwell in the middle of the pitch does really well,” Boyd said on Sky Sports. “Dessers was just onside, Cantwell played a nice little ball down the right-hand side and he fired a ball across.
“He took the PSV goalkeeper and backline out of play and the onrushing Rabbi Matondo was able to just pass the ball into the back of the net. Really good team goal.”
Rangers fans were already treated to one moment of magic from their team when loanee Sima fired in a stunning opener just before the halfway mark.
But more magic followed in the 76th minute of the match at Ibrox when the hosts scored a well-worked team goal.
The attackers were on form on the night, but the same perhaps cannot be said of Michael Beale’s defenders, who will be disappointed after conceding two times.
The manager will also be disappointed to have thrown away a lead on two occasions, but he will be proud of his men after their impressive display.
PSV are a top side, and have started the new season in fine fashion, but Rangers held their own and now go into the second leg with plenty to play for.
With the Europa League fall-back option in place, going out of the Champions League at this stage wouldn’t be a complete disaster for the Gers, but of course playing in Europe’s premier club competition should still be the aim.
