Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has sent a message to his franchise’s general manager Brett Veach following an exciting start to the 2024 NFL DraftPatrick Mahomes has sent his seal of approval to Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach following the team’s move on Day 2 in the NFL Draft.
The Chiefs’ quarterback took to social media to express his excitement after an eventful first two nights of the draft for the squad. Kansas City made a bold move by trading up for the 28th pick to snag Xavier Worthy, the speedster who shattered the NFL Combine’s 40-yard dash record this March.
They also picked up BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia, which led to Mahomes tweeting out his approval. The three-time Super Bowl winner took to X to post: “I love Veach man!”
Veach isn’t just a savvy GM, he’s got a solid american football pedigree himself, having been a standout running back at Delaware and nabbing third-team All-Atlantic 10 accolades in 2000. The Pennsylvania-born Veach kicked off his management career close to home with a coaching intern gig at the Philadelphia Eagles, quickly climbing the ranks in the league’s executive offices.
By 2017, Veach had ascended to the role of general manager for Kansas City, steering the team into its current era as a dominant force in the NFL, largely thanks to strategic draft picks. Star tight end Travis Kelce, who’s also known for dating pop megastar Taylor Swift, was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2013, while last year’s draft saw them unearth gem running back Isiah Pacheco from Rutgers in the seventh round.
Mahomes was a bit of a gamble when he was picked in the 2017 Draft, with Veach reportedly having to convince the organisation to take a chance on the gunslinger. The risk paid off handsomely for Kansas City, with Mahomes earning six Pro Bowl appearances and two MVPs.
Veech has been lauded for keeping a strong talent pool around Mahomes, bagging the league’s Executive of the Year Award in 2020 and 2023. But he faced his biggest wave of criticism when the team decided to trade star receiver Tyreek Hill to Miami two years ago.
