Kieran McKenna’s side impressed many when they finished second in League One last season.
The Tractor Boys appear to be more interested in competing in the top half of the league than simply keeping their spot in the second tier.
Results thus far this season have shown that they are ready to fight with the best in the division, but they still have a long year ahead of them.
It would be a remarkable achievement if the squad could contend for automatic promotion in their first season back in the Championship.
The squad is settled now that the transfer window has closed, and McKenna understands what he has to deal with.
However, free agents can still be registered for the time being, so it may be worth looking into who is available to help their chances in the Championship.
Here are six free agents Ipswich should consider…
Alfredo Morelos
Morelos left Rangers in the summer of 2017 and has yet to find a new club.
The forward might be the attacking force McKenna has been seeking all summer.
While he has disciplinary issues that must be addressed, the Colombian has a proven track record of consistent goals that would be a significant addition to Ipswich’s offensive options.
Perhaps a little ambitious, but it has never stopped Ipswich under McKenna.
Axel Tuanzebe
Tuanzebe has had a terrible few years due to injuries, but a reunion with McKenna could be just what he needs to jumpstart his career.
The centre back showed signs of promise during McKenna’s stint as a coach at Old Trafford, so the manager will know how to best utilize the player.
Tuanzebe, as a free agent signing, could prove to be a wise decision.
Ryan Nyambe
Nyambe is available after leaving Wigan Athletic, and he would be an excellent addition to the majority of Championship teams.
He might give solid defensive cover at right-back, giving McKenna some challenge.
Jagielka, Phil
Jagielka has shown that he can compete at a Championship level even in his 40s.
The defender would also bring so much experience to the team that any doubts about his ability to play consistently would be put to rest.
Jagielka has so much to offer this young team that he may be a great addition to McKenna’s roster.
Martin, Chris
Rogic had a difficult time at West Brom, which led to his departure after only a year at the Hawthorns.
However, a transfer to Ipswich would be a better fit for his skills.
The team’s style of play should suit the Australian, and he would provide some much-needed depth to McKenna’s side.
