College football transfer portal: real-time updates from 2023–24

Thanks to the new transfer portal, college football now offers free agency. Several thousand players have already benefited from this, and many more are expected to make moves before the 2024 campaign begins. On December 4, the day after College Football Playoff selection, the portal opens for the winter window. It stays available for the next thirty days, giving athletes time to decide what to do.

The 30-day window that starts immediately after Selection Sunday and the spring window that runs from April 15–30 are the two transfer gateway periods established by the NCAA. The first formal window will run from December 4, 2023, to January 2, 2024. At midnight, players can formally access the transfer portal and make their intentions known.
