Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens earns the second NFL Most Valuable Player honor.
At NFL Honors on Thursday night, Lamar Jackson was selected almost unanimously to receive his second AP NFL Most Valuable Player award.
49 out of 50 votes were cast for Baltimore’s All-Pro quarterback by a nationwide panel of voters that included coaches, former players, and members of the NFL media.
Although Jackson guided the Ravens (14-5) to the best record in the NFL during the regular season, they were defeated by the Chiefs in the AFC title game. Jackson, 27, is the fourth player behind Patrick Mahomes (27), Brett Favre (27), and Jim Brown (22) to earn their second MVP before turning 28.
Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers, a running back, easily won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Myles Garrett, an edge rusher for the Cleveland Browns, won the AP Defensive Player of the Year award over TJ Watt. With a resounding victory, Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. Stroud’s teammate, defensive end Will Anderson Jr., garnered two first-place votes more than Jalen Carter and Kobie Turner to win the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year title.
Four trophies were won by the Browns. The AP Comeback Player of the Year went to quarterback Joe Flacco, who stepped off the sofa and guided the Cleveland Browns to the postseason. By one first-place vote, Kevin Stefanski defeated Houston coach DeMeco Ryans to win the AP Coach of the Year award. After leading the league’s top-ranked defense, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was named the AP Assistant Coach of the Year winner.
Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, received the other first-place vote and was ranked sixth overall. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys finished second with 152 points. McCaffrey finished third with 147 points, while Brock Purdy, a teammate, finished fourth with 97.
Jackson led Baltimore to a record 10 victories over teams that finished with a winning record. He completed his passing for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns and his running for 821 yards and five scores. In the AFC title game, he struggled in a 17-10 loss to the Chiefs, but he did contribute to the Ravens’ divisional round sweep of Houston.
Running back for San Francisco, McCaffrey, scored 222 points and 39 of 50 first-place votes for OPOY, surpassing Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
In contrast to Watt’s 19 first-place votes and 140 points for DPOY, Garrett, the All-Pro edge rusher for Cleveland, garnered 23 first-place votes and 165 points.
Of the 50 first-place votes cast for OROY, 48 went to Stroud, and the remaining two went to Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.
In the same season, Anderson and Stroud become the fourth pair of teammates to win both the offensive and defensive rookie awards. For the New York Jets, Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner won a slew of honors the previous season.
Flacco won the comeback prize against quarterback Baker Mayfield of the Buccaneers and safety Damar Hamlin of the Bills. With 151 points, he finished with 13 first-place votes, 26 second-place votes, and 8 third-place votes.
After suffering a heart crisis on January 2, 2023, and collapsing on the field, Hamlin made a comeback to the NFL this season. Five regular-season games were attended by him. Although Flacco appeared on 47 ballots, Hamlin appeared on 42, earning him 21 votes in the first position. With 14 thirds and 7 votes for second place, he received 140 points.
Last season, Mayfield played every game for Tampa Bay and guided them to the second round of the playoffs. He was traded from the Browns to the Panthers and finally to the Rams. He received ten votes for first place and scored ninety-three points.
When Cleveland contacted Flacco in November, the 39-year-old former Super Bowl MVP was at home in New Jersey with his family. He passed for over 300 yards and 13 touchdowns in four consecutive games, going 4-1 in his five starts.
Quarterbacks Brock Purdy (1) of the 49ers, Matthew Stafford (1) of the Rams, and Tua Tagovailoa (4) of the Dolphins also received first-place votes.
Despite starting five quarterbacks and losing star running back Nick Chubb, right tackle Jack Conklin, and quarterback Deshaun Watson to season-ending injuries, Stefanski guided the Browns to their third postseason appearance since 1999.
The Houston Texans went from last to first in the AFC South with Ryans’ assistance. In a wild-card playoff game, the Texans defeated the Browns 41-14, but the vote was finished before the season.
A weighted scoring system awarded 165 points to Stefanski and Ryans. To Ryans’ 20 first-place votes, Stefanski received 21. Six votes for third place and eighteen for second place went to Stefanski. Ryans received 2 thirds and 21 votes in second place. Dan Campbell of Detroit came in third. He received three votes for first spot. First-place votes went to Sean McVay of the Rams (1), John Harbaugh of Baltimore (2), and Kyle Shanahan of San Francisco (3).
With 25 votes for first place and 160 points overall, Schwartz handily defeated Mike Macdonald, the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.
Hill ended with 139 points and seven votes for first place. CeeDee Lamb, a wide receiver for the Cowboys, finished third with 45 points, one of which was a first-place vote. Quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Ravens finished fourth, receiving three votes for first place.
McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459 yards) and had 14 rushing touchdowns for the NFC champion 49ers. He was unanimously selected for the All-Pro team. In addition, he caught 564 yards for seven touchdowns.
Micah Parsons, an edge rusher with the Cowboys, received seven first-place votes and ended third with 89 points for DPOY. Parson’s teammate, cornerback DaRon Bland, received the other first-place vote and finished fifth, trailing Raiders edge Maxx Crosby.
With 19 sacks, Watt led the NFL and was the 2021 winner of the award. However, Garrett’s season was superior overall for the NFL’s top-ranked defense.
Garrett had 14 sacks, 30 quarterback hits, 17 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, and caused offensive coordinators to stay away from his side of the field despite persistent double-teams.
Bland was listed on only six ballots, despite setting an NFL record with five interception returns for touchdowns. Along with one first place vote, he received two votes for second place and three for third.
At No. 2, Stroud threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions, and had the third-best rookie passer rating (100.8) of any player. He guided the Texans to victory in the wild-card stage of the playoffs and helped them leap from last to first place in the AFC South.
Stroud became just the third player in NFL history to finish #1 in both passing yards per game (273.9) and touchdowns-interception ratio (4.6), trailing only Joe Montana (1989) and Tom Brady (2007).
Nacua’s 1,486 receiving yards and 105 receptions set a rookie record. Sam LaPorta, a tight end with the Lions, placed third.
The AP weight point system was in its second year of use. Votes for MVP are worth 10 points in the first place, 5 points in the second, 3 points in the third, 2 points in the fourth, and 1 point in the fifth.
First-place votes are for five points, second-place votes are worth three, and third-place votes are worth one for all other honors.
Obviously, 2023 didn’t exactly go as planned.
After the wild ride of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, our prime minister here in the UK, Rishi Sunak, had promised us a government of stability and competence, not to mention professionalism, honesty, and accountability. Do you recall Liz? She appears to be a long-gone comic act these days. Rather, Sunak descended even more into the Conservative psychodrama through the looking-glass.
There have been no better pictures elsewhere. Donald Trump is currently a lot of people’s favorite to win the US presidency once more. The conflict in Ukraine has continued with little sign of resolution. It’s all too easy to see how the rest of the world could become weary of the fight and lose interest. In addition, there is the Middle East conflict and the climatic catastrophe.
But optimism is renewed with a new year. Numerous nations, including the US and the UK, are holding elections. We must have hope for change. that a better solution is achievable.
