When March arrives, bringing with it the much-anticipated March Madness, the best college basketball teams, both men’s and women’s, will battle for the national title in one of the most exciting and extensively viewed events in US sports.
But how do the playoffs work, and how can you choose which teams to watch and even wager on? It isn’t as hard as it appears, even with so many teams participating.
When the tournament kicks off, there will be 68 teams participating. The top 8 seeds face off in a play-in known as the “First Four.” March Madness comes next, with 64 teams, as it has in the past.
In each of the four regions (North, South, East, and West), the teams are rated from 1 to 16, and the matches are arranged such that team 1 plays team 16, team 2 plays team 15, and so on.
You can then choose your preferred team to move on to the next round. But since upsets are the essence of March Madness, it doesn’t follow that they can’t happen merely because a team is rated top. There will be a total of six rounds to play.
Usually, the highly seeded and favored teams don’t provide you a good return on your bets. To pull off an upset, it is not recommended to start as the underdog, even though it is feasible.
Since the men’s tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, just two No. 16 seeds have been able to overcome and defeat the top seed.
