The Packers fired McCarthy following a loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL season, and assistant coach Joe Philbin led the team in relief for the final four games of the campaign.
Matt LaFleur was appointed by the Packers as their fifteenth and current head coach following the conclusion of the season.

Mike McCarthy, the recently hired head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, believes he can succeed with another of the NFL’s legendary teams because of his tenure with the Green Bay Packers.
On Tuesday, McCarthy’s comeback to the league was officially announced when Jerry Jones of the Cowboys offered the 56-year-old his first position since the Packers fired him in December 2018.

McCarthy stated, “You look at the great coaches who have been here,” during his media introduction on Wednesday.
“The winners of the Super Bowl. Every player in the Hall of Fame. Take a look at this amazing quarterback play. I think there are many parallels that I can apply to this specific circumstance.
It is a privilege for me to oversee this venerable franchise. During the interview, I assured Jerry Jones that I would handle the honor, privilege, and accountability. since I am aware of it. I am aware of what is required.”
McCarthy led Lambeau Field to long-term success, making the playoffs nine times in his first eleven seasons, including a 2011 triumph in Super Bowl XLV.
Although some have questioned McCarthy’s choice in Dallas following his dismal performance in Green Bay, Jones views the inconsistent record of his new coach as a plus.
“Choosing a proven team builder and winner was one of our main objectives when choosing the Dallas Cowboys head coach,” Jerry Jones stated.
“We discovered a coach in Mike McCarthy who not only fulfilled those requirements but also had the track record of leading an NFL club to the grandest stage—a Super Bowl—and finishing the job.”

The Cowboys think they have their franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott, the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year who led the team’s top offensive in his fourth season, much as McCarthy did with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
After signing his rookie contract and being selected in the fourth round, Prescott is now a free agent. Where he ends up in 2020 is a given; the only issue is whether he signs a long-term contract that has been in the works for a year or if he is placed on the franchise tag.
McCarthy stated, “I’ve always been impressed with him.” McCarthy’s Packers defeated Prescott in the divisional round when he was a rookie.
