Eight Players Sign Future Contracts with the KC Chie
Now that the 2024 offseason is formally begun, Kansas City keeps some of its practice squad players.
Teams are assembling on the periphery in preparation for the 2024 NFL offseason, which will see a roster expansion to ninety for the following season. The Chiefs are no exception, having recently kept a number of players from their practice squad.
The news that seasoned defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs had re-signed on a futures contract surfaced earlier this week. Inked to new contracts with Kansas City on Wednesday, he was joined by seven other players, according to a personnel announcement. This is the entire list, which includes Buggs:
You should be familiar with several of those names from their regular season contributions. Dickerson, who appeared in 12 games and recorded 15 tackles (one for loss), was the most influential player on the list. The former star player from UCLA played 190 defensive snaps in the regular season and an additional 16 against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round.
At various times during the year, the names of Ingram, Prince, and Washington appeared elsewhere. Following his signing to the practice squad in late November, Ingram was activated before of the Cincinnati Bengals game in Week 17, although he was not involved in the game. A star in the preseason, Prince was a priority undrafted free agency acquisition. In Weeks 14 and 15, of the regular season, he played 15 special teams snaps. Bringing back one kickoff and eight punts for a total of 81 yards, Washington was one of the Chiefs’ primary return options in Weeks 3-6.
Jones signed as a free agent out of Harvard without being selected. During the AFC playoffs, Dean signed a contract with Kansas City’s practice squad. Taylor did not participate against the Miami Dolphins despite being activated from the practice squad before Wild Card Weekend.
It doesn’t hurt to have these players continue with the Chiefs as they proceed with their offseason. Futures contracts are infamously inexpensive, and having a 90-man roster depth is crucial for all teams to have throughout their summer training. After the completion of Super Bowl LVIII, Kansas City still has a few expired practice squad contracts to negotiate in the upcoming days and weeks, but this is a good start.
Update: Three additional players were added back to Kansas City’s reserve/future deals on Thursday. Izaiah Gathings, tight end, and Chukwuebuka, offensive tackle The group consists of quarterback Chris Oladokun and Jason Godrick.
