Big raise for Coach Lisa Bluder? Here’s what Iowa’s governor thinks

Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball coach took team to National Championship two straight years

DES MOINES, IOWA (KTIV) – No one has ever done what Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Head Basketball Coach Lisa Bluder has. She not only took the team to the National Championship game for the first time in school history last year but she has now done it two straight years.

Sunday the Hawkeyes lost to South Carolina 87-75.

Question: Does Coach Bluder get paid enough considering the team’s recent unprecedented success?

“No, I don’t think so. They should up her pay,” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds responded to reporters Tuesday at the Iowa Statehouse before then adding, “I’m teasing.”

Here are the accomplishments for Bluder, who has coached the Hawkeyes for 24 seasons, according to the University of Iowa athletics department:

Bluder’s $1.4 million base salary is less than half of the $3.2 million salary of Fran McCaffery, the Hawkeyes men’s basketball coach. McCaffery’s team didn’t qualify for the 68-team 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Over his 14 seasons as coach, McCaffery has won more games than any previous Hawkeye men’s coach. His teams have never advanced past the round of 32 teams in the NCAA tournament.

While Reynolds isn’t calling on a higher pay to reward Bluder for her accomplishments, she does want recognition for her. “She’s done a great job. It’s been an incredible season with incredible talent and players. That team has changed women’s sports forever.”

The team, led by generational superstar, Caitlin Clark, shattered viewing and attendance records this season. The women’s National Championship viewership topped the men’s for the first time.

An estimated 18.7 million watched the women’s game Sunday compared to 14.8 million who watched Monday when the University of Connecticut men defeated Purdue University 75-60.
