Report: Chiefs release wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

After defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs are back at work. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling has been released by Andy Reid and company.

Less than three weeks have passed since the squad won its third NFL championship in five years.

After Valdes-Scantling’s strong play during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run, Kansas City decided to release him, saving $12 million against the salary cap. During the postseason, Valdes-Scantling received eight of 13 targets for 128 yards, including a touchdown reception in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs’ highest-paid offensive free agency signing in 2022 was Valdes-Scantling. He signed a $30 million, three-year contract that reportedly included a $15 million guarantee. But, this past year saw a decline in his performance after he caught 42 catches for 687 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. After 16 regular-season games, the former wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers concluded the 23rd season with 21 receptions for 315 yards and one score.

After playing in Green Bay for the first four seasons of his NFL career, the 29-year-old caught 123 passes for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns.
