Benitez is fired by Everton after just six months in charge after a 2-1 loss to Norwich proves to be the breaking point.
After suffering their tenth consecutive loss this season, the Toffees have made the decision to alter their dugout.
Rafael Benitez was fired as Everton’s head coach following their 2-1 loss to Norwich on Saturday.
Although Benitez had previously managed Everton’s bitter rivals Liverpool from 2004 to 2010, he was first brought in to take Carlo Ancelotti’s place in the hot seat at Goodison Park back in June.
Under the Spanish manager, the Toffees started the 2021–22 season off strongly but soon faltered due to the injuries and positive Covid–19 test results of several key players. The final straw for an expecting board came in the shape of a 2-1 loss to relegation-battling Norwich.
What has been expressed?
Rafael Benitez has left the club, according to a statement released by the club: “Everton Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez’s resignation as first-team manager.
“Benitez, who signed a contract with Everton in June 2021, has departed the team immediately.
“We’ll provide an update on a permanent replacement when it becomes available.”
Why did Benitez say what?
In a statement posted on his personal website, Benitez claimed that the position was challenging due to the club’s financial difficulties and injury issues.
He wrote: “We were aware that it would be difficult and that it would be a significant challenge in terms of both sport and emotion. I took on this assignment because I love this city, Merseyside, and its people, but you don’t realize how big of a chore it is until you’re inside.
“From the first day, my team and I worked as we always do: with complete focus and commitment. We had to win people over as well as get results. But to make matters worse were the injuries that ensued and the financial predicament. We would have been better, in my opinion, had the injured players returned and the new recruits had arrived.
Unfortunately, in today’s football world, there is a constant lack of patience and a search for quick results. As a result, circumstances have dictated the project’s outcome, and it will not be feasible to pursue it further.
In any event, we would want to express our gratitude to the players, staff, Board, and supporters who have helped us throughout this difficult period.
“My warmest regards to EFC.”
Benitez’s disastrous leadership
After gaining five points from their first six Premier League games under Benitez, Everton went on an eight-game losing streak that included crushing home defeats to Watford and Liverpool.
Benitez was given a little reprieve at the beginning of December with a 2-1 victory against Arsenal at home and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea; however, the Toffees lost to Brighton and Crystal Palace before hitting a new low this weekend at Norwich.
In the end, Everton supporters never warmed up to Benitez, and he departs with a Premier League record of seven victories, eleven draws, and four defeats. He also oversaw their unexpected third-round Carabao Cup loss to QPR.
