OVERSEXT Russell Martin is adamant that Joe Rothwell can cover for Charlie Alcaraz, who went on a loan.

Alcaraz left Saints to sign a contract with Juventus, an Italian powerhouse, that includes an optional buyout clause of £43 million, good until the end of the current campaign.

By the deadline, Southampton had already signed David Brooks and Rothwell on loan and had no intention of replacing Alcaraz.

The Argentine midfielder, who became a Premier League fan favorite very quickly, has found it difficult to adjust to Martin’s approach this season.

Before joining the Old Lady, Alcaraz played in just 13 Championship games as a starter for the Saints.

When asked what he thought about Southampton’s transfer activities, Martin responded, “Charly is not in the building.”

“He has a fantastic opportunity to play for a major football team with a long history.

It’s also an opportunity for a player who, given his recent playing time, has likely been a little disappointed.

“Throughout January, we were informed that a few clubs were showing interest in signing him; Joe Rothwell was signed ahead of schedule to complement Charly.

We had to act quickly since he was the guy we desired. It would have been alright if Charly had stayed, but he ultimately left, leaving Joe in the building already.

“I believe it works for everyone. Charly is eager to play more football and here is his opportunity to shine at a major league team.

“We have a player here who was only briefly with his parent club and is really hungry. We continue to play Charly as well.

“It is also beneficial for everyone if he performs very well and Juventus wishes to sign him. As a team and financially, we have remained a strong asset.

“I am quite pleased with the work we have completed and the manner in which we have handled everything. Yesterday was a deadline day, and it was so lovely not to have to worry about anything.”
