The San Francisco 49ers “made a mistake with Patrick Mahomes,” which opened the door for Brock Purdy.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Brock Purdy as their quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft despite not doing “any work” on Patrick Mahomes.
Prior to the 2017 NFL Draft, the 49ers did very little to nothing to develop Patrick Mahomes; yet, this helped them get Brock Purdy.
Despite missing out on Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers were able to select Brock Purdy five years later as a result.
Adam Schefter of ESPN provided an explanation of how the 49ers acquired Purdy, who led the club to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas last month. In overtime of the NFL championship game, Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly defeated the 49ers, 25–22.
Schefter clarified: “The draft where the 49ers in 2017 had the second overall pick, Patrick Mahomes was in that draft, and they didn’t do any work on him because they thought the following offseason Kirk Cousins was leaving Washington (Commanders).”
However, midway through the season, they received an offer from the New England Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo, and those plans were altered. What happens is that New England phones San Francisco that Halloween and says, ‘Hey, we had to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo, just give us a two (second-round selection).'” Schefter continued. When they act in that way, the Kirk Cousins plan is completely derailed.”
The 49ers researched CJ Beathard, a quarterback they selected in the third round and another member of Mahomes’ draft class. A few years later, Beathard left the 49ers for the Jacksonville Jaguars. As compensation, the 49ers received a seventh-round pick, which they used to acquire Purdy in 2022.
After being selected in the 49ers’ first round due to injuries to Garoppolo and former first-round pick Trey Lance, Purdy has undoubtedly left his mark. In just his second season, the young star guided the team to two NFC Championship games and even a trip to the Super Bowl.
Purdy passed for an astounding 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. Nevertheless, in Super Bowl LVIII, they were unable to defeat the Chiefs.
Purdy will only get $870,000 (£685,1500) this year despite his accomplishments because of his low rookie deal and late selection pick. However, he’s undoubtedly positioning himself to benefit handsomely from a renewal in the future.
Purdy commented, “Not a lot has been said,” regarding the Chiefs’ loss from a month ago. It simply aches. It is evident that our squad is capable of winning the entire competition, yet we still fall short in that regard…
“With the way things have been going here over the past few years, everyone was desperate for it. I believe that at this point, we’re still attempting to sort of compile our ideas and everything. But I can assure you that everyone in that locker room is in love with one another.”
Last month, Mahomes praised Purdy highly, referring to the 49ers star as “a winner”. He continued: “He’s done a great job these last two years that he’s played, He does a great job extending plays, he does a great job making the throws.”
