Bengals Make QB Signing After Joe Burrow Injury: Report
GettyWith Joe Burrow out with an injury, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has three quarterbacks to choose from.
After Joe Burrow’s injury, the Cincinnati Bengals have added a third signal-caller to the practice squad, marking the first move in strengthening the quarterback room.
NFL Network source Tom Pelissero said on November 20 that the Bengals had welcomed back a familiar face since Joe Burrow was out for the season. “Drew Plitt, in his second spell with the team, has re-signed to the practice squad.”
“The QB room in Cincinnati moving forward [is]: Jake Browning, AJ McCarron, and Drew Plitt,” Pelissero continued.
While Plitt’s name may not have been what most Bengals fans were hoping to hear on a Monday morning following a defeat, it is excellent news for those who like Browning or McCarron. With a 5-5 record, it looks as though the two backup quarterbacks, starting with Browning, will handle the 2023 campaign.
This is where Brian Callahan, the coordinator, and offensive-minded head coach Zac Taylor have to show their mettle as play designers.
After his UDFA stint with Cincinnati, Bengals quarterback Drew Plitt played in the XFL.
Plitt made his NFL debut in 2022 after graduating from Ball State as an undrafted free agent. He spent some time throughout the preseason and training camp with the Bengals, but he was not selected for the squad.
Plitt will now have another opportunity to impress Cincinnati.
Over 38 starts and 45 outings, the 2022 UDFA passed for over 8,800 yards at Ball State. Over his collegiate career, he had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 65 to 30 with a passer rating of 136.6.
Plitt played quarterback for the Arlington Renegades in the XFL following his shot with the Bengals. In three of his five Arlington starts as quarterback, he completed 668 yards and 63% of the pass attempts.
With the Renegades, Plitt unfortunately saw a slight decline in his TD-to-INT ratio, as he combined for three passing touchdowns and five interceptions. Based on that decrease, he also had a sharp decline in his passer rating at the XFL level, falling to 71.6.
Plitt will be Cincy’s backup quarterback in case of emergency for the time being.
Bengals Place Reserve OL on Injured List and Clear Rookie Running Back Chase Brown for Practice
On November 20, there were two more roster changes involving the Bengals to cover. The news was published by the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the franchise.
“By designating him for return from the Reserve/Injured list, they cleared [RB] Chase Brown to practise.” “Added G. Jackson Kirkland to the injured/practice squad list.”
Brown, an Illinois product selected in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, has made five appearances this year. Although Brown’s return would provide starter Joe Mixon additional depth, as a rookie, he has spent more time playing on special teams than on offence.
“Today begins a 21-day period during which [Brown] may practise with the team without counting against the 53-player active roster,” reads a statement from Bengals.com. During that time, he might be added to the roster at any point.
Kirkland has not yet played in an NFL contest. At 6-foot-7 and 328 pounds, he is a rookie offensive lineman from the University of Washington, and his stature gives him considerable room to grow.
Kirkland is listed by the Bengals as having a “wrist” issue, while Brown is making a comeback from a “hamstring” injury that placed him on the disabled list on October 28.
Thus, on Monday of Week 12, Cincinnati was somewhat busy in addition to the signing of the quarterback. In the event that Browning and McCarron are unable to complete the task in the upcoming weeks, the question is whether they have finished replacing Burrow or if more will be added.
