In remarks to the media, head coach Nick Sirianni made it very apparent what he was searching for in his next offensive coordinator: a coach who would bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to help the Eagles capitalize on their elite talent.

Someone to advance the offensive to a new stage in its development.

“There’s going to be things that they bring that are going to be fresh ideas for us to help our players grow and help our players play at the top level, and there have been some things that we’ve done really well on offense, too, in the past that you’ll mesh in some of that together, as well, I think with some of the success that we’ve had these last three years and the things that our guys do well,” Sirianni stated. The fresh concepts blending with some of the older ones excites me, for that reason. As we proceed with our offseason procedures, we’ll monitor the situation and see where it ends up.”

Kellen Moore, an NFL coach who has been with Dallas since 2018, was chosen by the Eagles. He had previously served as an assistant and as offensive coordinator from 2019 to 22. In 2023, he will take over as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

“As an accomplished offensive coordinator, a former NFL player, and a Heisman finalist, Kellen has shown a tremendous ability to lead an offense at every level of the sport while gaining the trust and respect of his players and teammates,” Sirianni stated. “He’s a very intelligent football coach whose in-depth understanding of the game has made him a skilled playcaller in this league. As an NFL coach, Kellen has guided some of the league’s top offenses and assisted in the development of some of the best quarterbacks. Kellen is a welcome addition to our team.

The 34-year-old Moore, a quarterback from Boise State who was selected undrafted in 2012 and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2011, spent six seasons in the NFL with Dallas and Detroit, and is regarded as a bright, youthful talent in league circles.

Moore, who oversaw the offense in Dallas from 2020 to 22 and called the plays, had a great deal of success there. He twice guided the Cowboys to league-best yardage totals and once (2021 season) led the NFL in scoring (30.4 points per game). During that regular season, Dallas averaged an astounding 401.4 yards per game. Dallas finished second in the NFL in 2022 with 28.8 points per game during the regular season and first in the league with 71.34 percent red-zone touchdown efficiency.

The Cowboys had the second-highest point average (26.7) and second-best overall offense (391 net yards per game) in the NFL during the four seasons that Moore managed the offensive. They also had top-10 passing and running efficiency. In those four seasons, they also placed among the top four in terms of third-down percentage (44 percent).

A number of serious injuries to the offense dogged Moore’s season in Los Angeles, notably the injury that sidelined top quarterback Justin Herbert for the last month of the campaign. The Chargers averaged 23 points per game with Herbert throwing 20 touchdown passes and 7 picks before the injury.

The Chargers were seventh in the NFL in total offense heading into Week 6 of 2023, right before injuries truly started to affect the assault. They averaged 388.8 yards per game and 5.8 yards per play. With a 106.3 passer rating, Herbert ranked third in the league. In 44 drives, he had guided the Chargers to 13 touchdowns and six field goals.

Moore was a finalist for the head coaching position of the Miami Dolphins in 2022. According to Pro Football Focus, Moore was the second-best offensive playcaller in the NFL during that season. Because they saw Moore’s potential, the Chargers denied him interviews before appointing Jim Harbaugh as head coach last week.

With quarterback Jalen Hurts throwing 23 touchdown passes and running for 15 scores, wide receiver A.J. Brown having an All-Pro and career-best season with 106 receptions for 1,456 yards and 7 touchdowns, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith having 81 receptions for 1,066 and 7 touchdowns in the regular season, the Eagles moved quickly to acquire Moore in an attempt to add that extra spark to a 2023 offense that ranked seventh in the league averaging 26.4 points per game. Along with three offensive linemen (left guard Landon Dickerson, center Jason Kelce, and right tackle Lane Johnson), running back D’Andre Swift had a successful season with 1,000 yards of rushing.

The Eagles are bringing back a lot of offensive production, even with some expected personnel changes. Sirianni stated at the press conference at the end of the season that Moore was hired “to be in charge of the offense” and lead the team back to the top of the NFL in terms of output.
