Rangers candidate for sports director lauded for Arsenal transfer

Rangers still haven’t appointed a new sporting director but contender Steve Morrow has been highlighted as a key man in a big Arsenal transfer.

Ross Wilson left the Gers for Nottingham Forest in April, just a few weeks before the summer transfer market opened.

Rangers fans were enthusiastic about a fresh direction under a replacement, although Wilson had his detractors there.

Now that October is quickly coming, Rangers are without a substitute. About who might enter, not even a whisper is heard.

Michael Beale had a significant role in the summer transfer market, but the outcomes thus far are underwhelming.

Rangers require the building above Beale, and one candidate from the summer rumor mill has recently made headlines.

Rangers considered Steve Morrow appointment

Rangers was reportedly considering hiring Steve Morrow as the team’s new sporting director, according to a June story from The Athletic.

Morrow had emerged as a contender, and Rangers had hired executive search agency Executives in Sport to assist in the search.

Before taking up a position with the FA, Morrow was a former Arsenal player and the head of youth development.

Almost three months later, things have become a little quieter.

There are several uncertainties around a potential deal because the Northern Irishman is still not playing football and his transfer to Rangers hasn’t advanced.

Morrow role in Martin Odegaard deal highlighted

The Mirror have now talked up Morrow as a big reason why Martin Odegaard ended up signing for Arsenal.

It’s stated that other clubs wanted to sign Odegaard from Real Madrid after his loan spell at Arsenal in 2021.

Odegaard prioritized a transfer to Arsenal nonetheless because of the affection Morrow had shown him earlier.

Before Real won the race, Morrow tried to recruit Odegaard to Arsenal after seeing him with Stromsgodset.

Odegaard joined the Gunners in 2019, two years after Morrow departed the club, but his personal touch made a lasting effect and aided in his recruitment.

Morrow’s ability to recruit points to why he had such an effect on Odegaard all those years ago.

Morrow may still be a contender in Rangers’ eyes, and if a move happens, he would undoubtedly love to find another Odegaard.
