PITTSBURGH — Wide receiver Diontae Johnson has been back for the first time since Week 1 thanks to the Pittsburgh Steelers activating him off of Injured Reserve.
Johnson has missed most of the season thus far due to a hamstring injury that landed him on IR. He told reporters that he was playing against the Los Angeles Rams when he returned to practice following the bye week. He’s now officially been activated and placed back on the 53-man roster.
To make room for Johnson, the Steelers have released veteran wideout/kick returner Gunner Olszewski. Despite agreeing to a two-year contract with Pittsburgh in the offseason, Olszewski has had trouble controlling the ball during the first seven games and part of the previous campaign.
The team also announced tight end Pat Freiermuth will be placed on IR, shutting him down for a minimum of four games. Freiermuth suffered a hamstring injury in Week 4 and planned to return this week against the Rams. He will now be sidelined for an extended period of time following a setback during practice.
