Our SCU team and contributors select the “surprises” from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ most recent game each week. See which plays and circumstances startled us the most by reading on!
Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers were off for Week 6 and didn’t play, there were still a lot of other shocks that might have an effect on the club, particularly in their division.
The main stories from this weekend’s games are listed below.
Following last week’s game, a lot of supporters were waiting impatiently to find out if the Steelers would be firing their offensive coordinator.
The company would have fired Matt Canada by now if that was their intention. To give the team two weeks to prepare under a new coach, the news should have been made either last Monday or this Tuesday before the bye week.
To many supporters’ dismay, it is safe to conclude that Canada’s job is secure—if not for the full season, then at least for the time being.
Who would have guessed that the Cleveland Browns, who had to start a quarterback from the practise squad on Sunday, would have lost their season opener to the San Francisco 49ers, 5–0?
Nobody, obviously, but that’s what occurred as the Niners squandered multiple chances to seal the victory, including a botched P.J. Walker throw during the Browns’ last drive and a field goal attempt that was unsuccessful as time ran out.
Of all the games I’ve watched this season, the Browns vs. 49ers game had the worst officiating.
This season, John Hussey’s team has called the most penalties and penalty yards in a game. Cleveland was penalised 13 times for 119 yards, while San Francisco was flagged 12 times for 105 yards.
One of the trigger-happy crew’s mistakes late in the game helped the Browns to win the game with a field goal: a blown unnecessary roughness call for a clean contact.
Unfortunately, the Steelers have yet to see Hussey’s crew on a game this season, so be prepared for when we do!
Heading into Week 7 the Steelers sit in second place in the AFC North with a 3-2 record, 2-0 in their division.
The 4-2 Baltimore Ravens, with a victory over the Tennessee Titans in London, jumped up to first place during the Steelers bye. The Browns improved to 3-2 while the Cincinnati Bengals held off the visiting Seattle Seahawks to get to 3-3.
That means all four teams in the AFC North have records of at least .500 or better – it is the only division in the league where no team has a losing record.
Finally, the Steelers returned to practice this week with several players hoping to return from injuries. Among those are WR Diontae Johnson, RB Anthony McFarland Jr., and TE Pat Freiermuth.
One more player who was a starter, LT Dan Moore Jr., was sidelined for the Ravens game but reportedly took practice reps with the first team: bumping this year’s first-round pick Broderick Jones.
Hopefully, the Steelers staff recognizes that Jones was added to the team to solidify the offensive line and help protect QB Kenny Pickett, something Moore has failed to do through his first three seasons. Otherwise, it’s back to the same old story at left tackle when things appeared to get better with Jones in against Baltimore.
