It appears that yet another offseason target of the Philadelphia Phillies will not be rejoining the team next year.
The Philadelphia Phillies appear to only have room for bullpen additions this offseason.
It appears that Dave Dombrowski isn’t willing to spend that much money on a starting pitcher when he’s happy with the current five in the Phillies’ rotation, despite the rumors that they were considering some of the best pitchers still available.
There appeared to be a strong possibility that Robert Stephenson, widely regarded as the greatest right-handed reliever available in free agency this summer, would sign with Philadelphia.
They will, however, need to keep looking for a bullpen boost because, according to Jon Morosi of The New York Post, the 30-year-old has agreed to join the Los Angeles Angels.
According to Jack, also known as “@Jolly_Olive,” of Jomboy Media, Stephenson has a three-year, over $30 million contract with an option.
After Josh Hader received a huge contract from the American League champion Houston Astros, the Phillies had already lost out on one of their top objectives.
In free agency, there are still good possibilities available.
It’s conceivable that Philadelphia has to sign one or two of the best arms available. There was obviously a need in the back part of the bullpen after Craig Kimbrel left for the Baltimore Orioles.
The relief staff will benefit from Orion Kerkering playing in more games this season, but unless Griff McGarry, their No. 5 prospect, is converted to a reliever, it appears that no one in their farm system has the potential to advance that far.
Thus, the Phillies have a lot of work ahead of them as they navigate this winter before the 2024 season begins.
