Syracuse, New York —Sources tell Syracuse.com on Saturday night that former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord has committed to play football coach Fran Brown at Syracuse University.
McCord’s pledge to Syracuse may be formally announced as early as this Sunday.
Upon opening the transfer portal on Monday, McCord made a decision that came as a major surprise in December. It happened the day after Ohio State was chosen to face Missouri in the Cotton Bowl and the day coach Ryan Day declined to say with certainty that McCord would be the team’s starting quarterback in 2024.
In his lone season as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes, McCord completed 229 of 348 passes for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He threw two interceptions in Ohio State’s defeat to Michigan, and he collected five of his six picks in the season’s last five games. Ohio State had fallen short against the Wolverines for the third time in a row.
He joins Jackson Meeks and Zeed Haynes, two former Georgia wide receivers, as new members to the Syracuse offense via transfers. Before taking a job as Syracuse’s head coach, Brown, a native of New Jersey, was the Bulldogs’ defensive backs coach.
DeQuan, the quarterback for Toledo Finn moves to Baylor.
QB DeQuan Finn of Toledo is transferring to Baylor.
Finn declared his commitment to the Bears on Sunday night. Following Blake Shapen’s transfer, Baylor required a starting quarterback.
As one of the top quarterbacks in the MAC, Finn has started for the Rockets the last three seasons. This season, Finn has started all 13 of Toledo’s games. He completed 201 of 317 passes for 2,657 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. In addition, he gained 563 yards and seven touchdowns on 123 rushes.
Finn has completed 540 of 896 passes for 7,079 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in his career. In addition, he has 390 rushes for 1,837 yards. He has five seasons left of eligibility because he attended Toledo.
Nate Johnson lands at Vanderbilt
Nate Johnson, a former quarterback for Utah, is going to Vanderbilt.
Johnson made his commitment to Vanderbilt on Sunday night, guaranteeing a starting spot for the Commodores in 2024. Due to Cameron Rising’s knee injury, Johnson began the 2023 season splitting time at quarterback for the Utah Utes with Bryson Barnes.
Throughout the season, Johnson gave up playing time to Barnes, but he still has three years left to be eligible. Johnson completed 39 of 72 passes for 499 yards and three touchdowns in eight games. He also gained four touchdowns and 235 yards with 49 rushes. The 2022 recruit was a dual-threat talent rated three stars.
Will Rogers travels to Washington
Washington’s next quarterback has been identified.
On Friday night, Will Rogers, a former quarterback for Mississippi State, announced his commitment to the Huskies on ESPN. Rogers spent Friday in Washington.
With one more season of eligibility, Rogers is a great candidate to take Michael Penix Jr.’s place in Washington’s high-powered offense. Rogers battled with injuries in 2023 despite being incredibly effective in Mike Leach’s Air Raid scheme at MSU.
For the Bulldogs, the four-year starter leads all time in touchdown passes. In 2022, he passed for about 4,000 yards, while in 2021, he passed for over 4,700 yards. As MSU struggled in its first season following Leach’s unexpected death a year earlier, he played in just eight games in 2023 and completed only 1,626 yards and 12 touchdown passes.
During his four years of collegiate football, Rogers has 1,301-of-1,876 throwing for 12,315 yards and 94 touchdowns against just 28 interceptions. Should he have a successful season at Washington, he might finish in the top 10 in career passing yards. Rogers is now fewer than 3,000 yards out of sixth place among all-time collegiate quarterbacks, where he is ranked 39th.
QB KJ Jefferson of Arkansas will transfer.
KJ Jefferson, the quarterback for Arkansas, will play his last six years of collegiate football at a different school.
The three-year starter announced on Saturday that he will be using the transfer site. He made his declaration more than a week after he had stated he wasn’t sure whether he would transfer in response to a rumor that he would be entering the portal.
While Jefferson missed the final game of the season due to injury, he participated in all 12 of Arkansas’ games in 2023. This season, Jefferson’s numbers decreased along with Arkansas’ performance. Following the 2022 season, offensive coordinator Kendal Briles accepted a same role at TCU.
Jefferson has completed 626 of 962 passes for 7,911 yards and 67 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions in his career. Along with 1,876 yards and 21 touchdowns, he has also run. As a junior in 2022, Jefferson ran for over 600 yards and completed over 2,600 yards of passing with 33 touchdowns overall.
Georgia LB In the portal, Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson, a linebacker for Georgia, logged into the transfer site on Friday.
Since enrolling, the two-year starter has made a substantial contribution. Due to injuries, Dumas Johnson only participated in nine games in 2023 but recorded 34 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss.
As a sophomore in 2022, he finished with 70 tackles and nine tackles for loss in 15 games. Johnson had 14 games as a freshman and totaled 21 tackles before making an impact last season.
Mario Williams, WR for USC, is seeking for a new school.
Following the NCAA’s announcement on Friday, Mario Williams, a wide receiver for USC, emerged as the most prominent possible two-time transfer to use the portal.
The NCAA said that players can transfer a second time and remain instantly eligible through the conclusion of the academic year following a court decision earlier this week that prohibited it. On3 revealed that Williams had accessed the site a few hours after the NCAA released its announcement.
Williams and quarterback Caleb Williams moved to USC from Oklahoma after Lincoln Riley was appointed head coach of the Trojans. In 2023, Williams caught 29 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns.
He recorded 40 receptions for 631 yards and five touchdowns in the previous season. Williams has 104 receptions for 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns over the course of three seasons.
QB Maalik Murphy of Texas is transferring.
Maalik Murphy is moving since Quinn Ewers is starting at quarterback for Texas right now and Arch Manning isn’t going anywhere.
Redshirt freshman Murphy, a former four-star prospect, declared on Wednesday that he intends to use the transfer portal through his marketing firm.
Murphy will not play for the Longhorns in the College Football Playoff, where they are slated to play No. 2 Washington in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Murphy has made three appearances in the season and has thrown for 477 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions on 6.7 yards per attempt. Given that he was turned down for the position in Austin due to a renownedly filled quarterback room, it is probable that he will be able to secure a starting position somewhere.
