Willock had resumed training, according to Magpies head coach Eddie Howe, but Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace came too soon.
Howe stated in a statement on Friday, “I want him back! We must, of course, exercise common sense. This week marks his first training session back with the team. Though it’s probably too soon for him to be included in the matchday roster, he’s getting there. He’s essential to our team.
Howe, a former midfielder for Arsenal, was filmed by Sky Sports News during a full training session. He will update the media later this afternoon when he speaks to them at St James’ Park
Howe, who faces the possibility of a midfield crisis in the upcoming weeks with Bruno Guimaraes one yellow card away from serving a one-match suspension and Sandro Tonali under investigation for suspected illegal betting activity, will be extremely happy to see Willock return.
Willock made 43 appearances in all competitions last season as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.
