Sandro Tonali, a midfield player for Newcastle, is the subject of an investigation by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office for allegedly breaking betting regulations.
The 23-year-old Italy international was taken out of Tuesday night’s Euro 2024 qualifying match at Wembley against England. According to a statement released by his club, he is cooperating with the investigation.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office are looking into Sandro Tonali’s involvement in illicit betting activities, the Premier League team said.
Sandro is cooperating fully with the investigation and plans to do so going forward with all pertinent authorities.
He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.
Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.
Eddie Howe must decide whether to include Tonali in his Newcastle squad when they return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
As he trains with his teammates and waits for the outcome of his case, Tonali is free to play for the team.
In a hearing held at the Italian Federation in Turin on Tuesday, the midfield player acknowledged that he had placed wagers on Milan to win games.
Following his involvement last week in an Italian football betting scandal, Tonali was left off of the senior men’s team for Tuesday’s loss to England.
