Newcastle United's academy recruitment campaign will continue with the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers' Leo Shahar.
Newcastle have been in talks with the England Under-16 international, and a deal has been struck for the right-back to join the club, as previously reported. Wolves rank the 16-year-old highly and he played regularly for the club’s Under-18s team last season, scoring twice in 15 league games.
“Every time I watch [Shahar] playing for England, he looks comfortable within the environment,” Wolves head of player development Darren Ryan told the club website. We know how good he is technically, and there are some areas he needs to work on, but the more camps he attends and the more call-ups he receives, the more at ease he appears to be.
“His performances with the under-18s have been really consistent, and he’s now getting opportunities to train with the 21s on school release days.” It’s fantastic to see him in that setting with some of the greatest players in the country.
“He’s been selected in a number of recent camps due to his consistency.” He’s doing well for us, and the staff and coaches notice.”
Shahar is expected to join Newcastle’s Under-18s squad for the 2023-24 season. He will join Michael Mills from Port Vale and Sam Alabi from Oldham Athletic in the academy.
The pair are expected to play for Newcastle’s Under-16s team next season.
