Eight first-team players’ statuses have been updated by Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe in advance of Saturday’s home Premier League matchup against Burnley.
The Magpies enter their match against the Clarets in good spirits after dispatching Sheffield United 8-0 last weekend and then defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Howe is now concerned about the health of several important players who are dealing with ailments or mild illnesses, though.
Harvey Barnes, a summer acquisition, is one player who will miss a sizable amount of time. According to Howe, the winger won’t be able to return until the New Year owing to an injury underneath the toe.
Joe Willock is also out due to his ongoing Achilles injury recovery; he is not anticipated to make a comeback until after the upcoming international break in mid-October.
Due to a minor hamstring strain, Callum Wilson is now questionable for Saturday’s match, and center-back Sven Botman, who scored his first goal for Newcastle against Sheffield United, is dealing with a knee problem.
Today, we’re going to find out. Howe revealed at a press conference on Friday that Callum has very slight hamstring stiffness. “We’ll do everything we can to make him available. Sven will also be checked on at a later time.
Another player who will need to be evaluated prior to kickoff is Alexander Isak, who scored the game-winning goal against Man City after suffering a knock in midweek.
Howe continued, “He’s another one we’ll need to check on late.” It normally builds up during the third game, which is the price of having three games in a week.
Dan Burn, a defender, has been feeling under the weather, but according to Howe, he should be fine to rejoin the matchday squad on Saturday.
.
Bruno Guimaraes, a midfielder, has received similar praise, and the Newcastle manager is optimistic that the Brazilian will be eligible for selection after twisting his ankle against Manchester City.
Howe said, I believe he did twist his ankle in the game (on Wednesday). I believe that at first it took him some time to run it off, but I hope he is OK now.
Howe has also given a promising update on Emil Krafth’s health, who hasn’t played for Newcastle since August 2022 because of a problematic knee injury.
Emil will participate in tonight’s (Friday) Under-21 game, Howe continued. It’s wonderful to see him return and I hope he has a successful day.
With a win over Burnley, who have yet to win since gaining promotion, Newcastle, who is now sitting eighth in the Premier League standings, could close the gap to the top four teams by two points.
