Unexpectedly, Napoli names veteran director Meluso

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed the appointment of Mauro Meluso as the club’s new sporting director, replacing Cristiano Giuntoli, who just joined Juventus. The Partenopei were not anticipated to bring in a replacement at first. They were linked to many choices as late as Wednesday, including Frederic Massara, Igli Tare, and Markus Kroesche.

The Partenopei will continue to select officials from smaller clubs for their positions. Eight years ago, their previous apical one arrived from Carpi. Pier Paolo Marino, who was from Udinese, had been replaced by him.

Before hearing from Napoli, Meluso spent time with a number of teams in the lower divisions. At Foggia, Padova, Pisa, Sangiovannese, Teramo, Ternana, Frosinone, and Cosenza, he gained valuable experience. His greatest accomplishment was helping to reinstate Lecce in the top division after they had been demoted to Serie C.

Following their relegation in 2020, he was released and promptly signed a three-year contract with Spezia. He left the Aquilotti after one season, despite the fact that they achieved their aim that season.

Meluso joins Napoli’s current officials, as no one else has transferred to Turin with Giuntoli. De Laurentiis is actively involved in the transfer market and will remain so throughout the summer.
