Nighttime at the den: Lions defeated at home

At The Den on Sunday, Millwall was defeated 3-0 by Leeds United.

Joel Piroe’s two goals gave the visitors the advantage before Georginio Rutter’s goal gave The Whites a three-goal lead.

For the Whites’ visit, Gary Rowett changed his starting lineup, bringing in Ryan Longman and Allan Campbell, while moving Zian Flemming to the bench.

In the opening minute, the Lions made an attempt to score against their opponents and created a chance, but Leeds was able to scramble a corner kick away at the back post.

On the seventh minute, Longman lifted the ball into the area, forcing Ilian Meslier to punch the ball away from his goal. Tom Bradshaw then forced the goalkeeper off the ball, but referee Christopher Kavanagh blew up for a foul just as the ball was about to go into the goal.

In contrast, Leeds seized the lead with their first effort on goal with 15 minutes remaining as Joel Piroe sneaked through to direct past Bartosz Bialkowski, only seconds after it seemed as though Kevin Nisbet had been fouled further upfield.

As The Lions started to force more corners just before the half-hour mark, Crysencio Summerville left Bialkowski in no man’s land and lobbed towards the goal on 24 minutes. Fortunately, his attempt missed the goal, and shortly after Billy Mitchell’s attempt went over to start the final five minutes of stoppage time..

Bradshaw was passed in by De Norre in the first few seconds of the second half, but Meslier saved his shot. With gloomy clouds above South London, The Lions increased their effort on and off the field as the hour mark approached.

But at the other end, Summerville was poised to shoot from the edge of the six-yard box, and it took a crucial tackle from Jake Cooper to save Bialkowski from being put to the test.

De Norre and Leonard had a wonderful passing exchange on the right, though Leonard’s cross was cleared. On the 64th minute, the manager changed up his attacking lineup by substituting Duincan Watmore, Flemming, and Romain Esse for Nisbet, De Norre, and Campbell. Longman’s attempt from outside the box went over the crossbar, but on the 78th minute, Leeds were given room to play in the centre of the pitch, and the ball eventually fell at Piroe’s feet for a tap-in from a distance of yards.

With no additional opportunities to report on, The Lions were defeated in SE16 three minutes later as Rutter capitalized on a slip to score three goals.
