The Round-Up | A difficult weekend for the football team

As our Men’s, Women’s, and Youth teams took the field, it was a weekend full of promise, heart, and camaraderie for the football club.

Everyone associated with the Club and the area experienced great sadness as we paid tribute to those who sadly lost their lives in the Gresford Colliery Disaster.

Over 10,000 supporters silently remembered those who died inside the STK Cae Ras on Saturday, the day after the tragedy that shocked the town and the larger community.

.Our youthful Red Dragons, competing in the EFL Youth Alliance, went up against Oldham Athletic Youth first on Saturday.

Keane Hazeldine, a talented midfielder, provided the inspiration for Nick Chadwick’s team as his double helped them earn the three points and get back to winning ways.

Although Salford City narrowly defeated them last weekend, they had a far more easy performance this time.

Alfie Brindley-Smith’s injury, which required him to be regrettably stretchered off and necessitated a reshuffle, unfortunately struck Latics.

Due to the nature of Brindley-Smith’s treatment, 22 further minutes were added, and the Red Dragons received one extra minute before halftime.

Hazeldine took advantage of a defensive blunder by Latics, when Connor Withers and Jose Lopez’s misunderstanding allowed the midfielder to run the ball into the empty net.

PDP Coach Chadwick expressed his joy at the outcome after his team earned their third victory of the year.

Later that day, while seventh-place took on twelfth, the First Team played a match against a previous play-off rival in Grimsby Town.

The momentum was with Phil Parkinson’s team after three straight victories as they sought to move up the table.

Paul Mullin started the game for the first time this season as his recuperation from the injury he sustained in San Diego progressed.

Just after the hour mark, Ollie Palmer headed into the top corner after latching onto Elliot Lee’s through ball to give the game the perfect start.

Another inch-perfect cross provided the second goal, but this time it was James McClean of the Republic of Ireland who provided the help.

McClean retrieved the ball wide to the left.

The Red Dragons maintained tight control throughout the second half, which continued the first’s comfortable pattern.

Before the game ended, our top scorer increased his total with a deft finish from Lee that placed the ball beyond Jake Eastwood’s reach.

The victory moved Wrexham up the standings into fourth place, putting them three points off the lead.

After the final horn, assistant manager Steve Parkin reaffirmed his satisfaction with the team’s development from the first week.

“Today is a thoroughly good defensive performance, and we had a real goal threat,” he remarked.

We could have won by even more goals, in my opinion.

A mark of their success, they were handed a tough test of the six-time champions Swansea City visiting The Rock.

It also gave Steve Dale’s side added pressure having to handle the television cameras, which was something they became accustomed to last season against Connah’s Quay Nomads and Briton Ferry Llansawel.

However, it seemed pressure was just a word that they thrived upon, as after riding some early pressure they put themselves ahead.

Rebecca Pritchard linked smartly with Rosie Hughes and the scorer of the goal that sealed promotion found the net again, striking the ball hard and low into the bottom corner.

Before the break, a nasty collision for Swansea striker Stacey John-Davies resulted in her being taken to hospital and the visitors calling upon Robyn Pinder from the bench.

It was the provider of the first who got the second, as a powerful run and through ball from Lili Jones found Hughes who made no mistake from inside the 18-yard box.

Pinder pulled one back for City, slotting home into the net and the goal also saw the end of Del Morgan’s evening she unfortunately went off injured.

Debutant Charlotte Bolland was propelled into the thick of the action coming off the bench, but she couldn’t keep out Chloe Chivers’ rasping volley to put the game level.

There had been much anticipation in the stands to see summer signing and ex-international Hannah Keryakoplis make her debut, and what an entrance she made.

The former Liverpool midfielder appeared to have scored the winning goal in the 87th minute when he picked up the loose ball inside the penalty area and tucked it away.

Ellie Lake’s careless reaction to Pritchard resulted in her receiving a red card, and Katie Horsford’s goal that was cruelly deflected deep into extra time to square the score added to the drama of the evening.

Despite having the lead for so long, a point on the first day was still an excellent result, and Dale added that he was pleased with how his team played.

In contrast to a very excellent club that will be in the mix at the end of the season, he stated, “We have demonstrated we are more than capable.
