On Monday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) published a statement addressing the situation and announcing Antony’s absence from the next games against Bolivia and Peru.
The statement emphasized the importance of investigating the allegations and putting the claimed victim, the player, the Brazilian squad, and the CBF first.
According to ESPN, the CBF issued a statement saying, “Due to the facts that became public this Monday involving Manchester United player Antony, and which need to be investigated, and in order to safeguard the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian team, and the CBF, the organization informs that the athlete has been withdrawn from the Brazilian team.”
Manchester United has chosen not to comment on the allegations thus far, allowing the judicial process to play out.
This incident came just a month after Manchester United made news by deciding not to renew the contract of star striker Mason Greenwood, who was accused of similar abuse. Those allegations, however, were later withdrawn against Greenwood in February.
Manchester United and the football community at large will be keeping a careful eye on developments in Antony’s case as the investigations continue.
