The newspaper has reported on its website [7 August] that United have held discussions over Onana as well as Leeds United’s Tyler Adams, but the talks have not progressed, with Everton likely not keen on letting their star man leave the club.
Onana has been tentatively linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, with West Ham also credited with an interest in the Belgian international [Daily Mail, 25 June], but Everton do not want to see him leave as he is regarded as one of their most talented players.
Attention comes with quality performances
In football, the hierarchy of clubs often makes itself clear through the transfer window, as some of the world’s biggest clubs circle for talented players. Everton were involved in a relegation battle last season, surviving on the final day, but Onana’s performances have still attracted interest from Manchester United.
It is sadly the case for Everton, with the club in the position it currently finds itself in, that as soon as a player turns in quality performances for them, there will be bigger clubs looking to tempt him away.
This feeling is also being experienced by Crystal Palace this season, with clubs circling for Michael Olise, and Brighton with Chelsea’s insistent interest in Moises Caicedo.
Everton will be hopeful of keeping Onana at Goodison Park this season, as they look to give themselves the best chance of surviving relegation, and news that the talks have not progressed will come as a relief.
Sean Dyche’s squad is already light on depth, so to lose such a key player with less than a week to go until their season opener against Fulham would be a huge hit to take.
