Harry Maguire scored the only goal of the game, however, the Danish side had a massive chance to equalise at the death at Old Trafford, but Onana saved it.
United, who were beaten by Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in their other Group A games, were desperate for a win.
Fans felt as though they should have been awarded a penalty around the hour mark as Marcus Rashford went down inside the area.
He was deemed offside and play resumed but Erik ten Hag’s side finally found the breakthrough thanks to an unlikely goalscorer.
Christian Eriksen’s cross found Maguire towards the back post and he headed it down and into the back of the net from close range.
Erik ten Hag’s second season with the team, 2023–24, began with Manchester United in a positive frame of mind.
Ten Hag was expecting to get United even closer to treble-winning rivals Manchester City after United finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup. United is in serious need of ending a 10-year title drought.
Although the previous season ended in disappointment due to a loss to Man City in the FA Cup final, overall their first season under new management at Old Trafford might be considered a success.
With 17 goals in the Premier League, Marcus Rashford led Manchester United in scoring the previous campaign.
Overall, England international Rashford scored a stunning 30 goals in all competitions.
The last Manchester United player to rank as their top goalscorer in two straight seasons was Wayne Rooney (in 2013/14 and 2014/15).
Rashford is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer by winning two consecutive scoring titles in 2023–2024 after inking a new long-term deal. Rasmus Hojlund, a recent addition to United who is expected to score a lot of goals, could pose a threat to him.
Following each matchday this season, this page will be updated with Manchester United’s highest scorers in the Premier League and in all competitions.
Man Utd: Premier League top scorers 2023/24
Manchester United have scored just 11 goals in their first nine EPL matches, but they will hope their latest two top-flight outings indicate they have turned the corner this season.
Man Utd top scorers in EPL
Player | Goals |
---|---|
Scott McTominay | 3 |
Bruno Fernandes | 2 |
Marcus Rashford | 1 |
Diogo Dalot | 1 |
Hannibal Mejbri | 1 |
Casemiro | 1 |
Christian Eriksen | 1 |
Raphael Varane | 1 |
Following a depressing 1-0 home loss to Crystal Palace, it appeared as though Man United would lose by the same score against Brentford at Old Trafford in the league.
However, replacement Scott McTominay scored his first two goals of the year at the ideal time, scoring twice in thrilling stoppage time to give manager Erik ten Hag some much-needed relief.
Man Utd returned to action on Saturday with an away game against struggling Sheffield United. The team used the October international break to reflect on that thrilling victory.
McTominay scored again in that game, taking him to the top of the club’s league scoring charts, only to concede a penalty for handball, allowing Sheff Utd to equalize from the spot. However, full-back Diogo Dalot found the top corner with a long-range strike in the 77th minute to give Manchester United back-to-back league victories. It was only the second Premier League goal of Dalot’s career.
Prior to those EPL games, Bruno Fernandes scored a fine winner against Burnley. His volley from an impressive Jonny Evans pass gave the visitors a much-needed 1-0 win at Turf Moor.
The winning goal at Burnley made Fernandes the first United player this season to score more than once in the Premier League. Both of the captain’s strikes in 2023/24 have been crucial winners.
Man United had previously lost 3-1 at home to Brighton in the Premier League. Hannibal Mejbri scored his first goal for the club late in the game, but it did little to improve the mood.
The Brighton loss was Man United’s third of the PL season and the Palace defeat made it four.
Previously, Marcus Rashford scored his first goal of the season but was unable to prevent Man United from falling to another 3-1 reverse, with that loss being a painful one at Arsenal.
Last season’s top scorer Rashford got his first goal of the 2023/24 campaign in the first half at Arsenal, cutting in from the left to score with a fine finish.
Rasmus Hojlund is yet to get his first EPL goal after having a strike ruled out against Brighton, while Alejandro Garnacho has had a goal disallowed too, with the winger being denied for offside against Arsenal.
One of the rare positive notes of the season so far saw Fernandes score the winner as Man United recorded a dramatic comeback to defeat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro also scored as the Red Devils recovered from two goals down.
On the opening week of the season, Raphael Varane was the unlikely hero for Manchester United as they defeated Wolves 1-0 at Old Trafford.
The goal for Varane was just his second for Man Utd, even though this is his third season with the club. His only other strike had come against Brentford in May 2022 towards the end of his first campaign with the team.
United only have 15 points from nine matches in the Premier League so far and there will still be huge concerns for Ten Hag.
Man Utd top scorers in all competitions 2023/24
In addition to the Premier League, Manchester United will compete in the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup this season.
So far, the club has faced Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Brighton, Burnley, Palace, Brentford, and Sheffield United in the Premier League.
And they have now played their first four matches outside of the EPL, scoring eight times in total. It means they have netted a total of 20 goals in all competitions.

It was a thriller, as United ultimately lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in Germany to kick off their Champions League campaign.
Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal for the club in the second half, meaning he did not have to wait long to open his account after having a strike ruled out against Brighton in his first start.
As the match opened up in the closing stages, Casemiro was the surprise scorer of a double for Man Utd.
Casemiro scored again as Man Utd comfortably defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.
The headed goal extended his advantage at the top of the club’s scoring charts, as he reached four strikes overall. Casemiro’s goals have been an unexpected bonus since he signed from Real Madrid. The holding midfielder scored seven times last season too.
Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial also scored their first goals of the campaign against Palace in the cup.
Hojlund was the top performer against Galatasaray in Matchday 2 of the Champions League. He scored twice at Old Trafford, but Man Utd still suffered a desperately disappointing 3-2 defeat. With the club showing some worrying form, fans will hope there is much more of that from new signing Hojlund, as he has not scored since.
Man Utd battled to a 1-0 home win over Copenhagen in MD3 of the UCL, with Harry Maguire scoring a decisive second-half header. The centre-back’s goal was his first since February 2022 against Leeds United.
It was not a convincing win for United, who needed a dramatic stoppage-time penalty save from Andre Onana to preserve the three points.
Man Utd next fixtures
The attacking stars at Man Utd have not made a vintage start to the season, particularly in the Premier League.
While netting multiple goals in the games against Bayern Munich, Palace, Galatasaray, Brentford and Sheff Utd provides some hope, there is little time for the players to waste if they are to turn the situation around.
After salvaging wins over Brentford, Sheff Utd and Copenhagen either side of the break for the October internationals, there are some crucial fixtures coming up next.
Man Utd fixtures for 2023/24 include their next match at home to Man City on Sunday October 29. The huge Old Trafford clash will be the first Manchester derby of the season.
Another home match will come after that, as Man Utd play Newcastle United in the EFL Cup last 16 on Wednesday November 1.
On Saturday November 4 Man Utd will have a Premier League match away to Fulham.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the previous Man Utd attacker to have scored more than 40 goals in a season. He had 42 in 2007-08 as the club won the Premier League and Champions League trophies. Ronaldo had 31 EPL goals that year, which is the club record in that competition.
Ruud van Nistelrooy scored 44 goals in 2002-03 but the all-time single-season record is held by Denis Law, who scored 46 goals in 1963–64.
Even though his time at Man Utd has been heavily impacted by injuries, Anthony Martial has been the top scorer twice.
Cristiano Ronaldo and the Saudi Pro League top scorers
The prolific Van Nistelrooy was top of the Man Utd scoring charts in four separate seasons, which is the same total achieved by Ronaldo. CR7 did it three times in his first spell at the club, and was then top scorer in 2021/22 after returning to Old Trafford.
But it is Rooney who fares best. He topped the Manchester United scoring charts six times.
Which Man Utd players have won the Premier League Golden Boot?
Manchester United players have won the Premier League Golden Boot on five separate occasions, though they have not had a winner sine 2013, which is also the last time they won the title.
Premier League assists: How are Man Utd stars performing?
Robin van Persie was the previous Man Utd winner in that 2012-13 title-winning season. It was his second Golden Boot in a row, but his first had come with Arsenal.

Van Persie, Ronaldo, and Van Nistelrooy were all crowned champions outright.
Despite being a prolific forward for Man Utd, Wayne Rooney never won the EPL Golden Boot

3. Denis Law | 237 | 404 |

He beat the previous record held by club legend Bobby Charlton (249 goals), while Denis Law is in third place with 237 goals.
Man Utd 1-0 FC Copenhagen: Andre Onana saves stoppage-time penalty as Harry Maguire goal secures first Champions League win
Report as Harry Maguire’s header lifted Manchester United off the bottom of Group A with a 1-0 Champions League win over FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford but only after Andre Onana saved Jordan Larsson’s stoppage-time penalty
Andre Onana saved a stoppage-time penalty as Manchester United secured a remarkable 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on the night Old Trafford paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.
Harry Maguire’s header in the 72nd minute proved to be the winning goal but only after Jordan Larsson, son of the former United player Henrik, saw his penalty saved with what proved to be the final kick of the game.
It was an extraordinary end to a night on which Old Trafford marked the passing of the United and England legend, who died on Saturday at the age of 86. What followed was a subdued performance by United in the first half but they delivered the sort of dramatic ending for which this club is famed.
Erik ten Hag’s team remain six points adrift of Group A leaders Bayern Munich but are now within a point of Galatasaray, their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League still intact. An unconvincing night, but a truly special one.
